She clamps her lips together. “Yes.”

“And why is that?”

Raela blindly sets her glass on the cabinet and strides up to me until we’re chest to chest. “Because,” her voice is thick with the threat of emotion, “because I still love you.”

Whatever I was expecting her to say, it wasn’t that.

The flash of movement behind her has my eyes darting to the side, just in time to see Shae running into the cleanser, the door sliding silently shut behind her.

Vittu!Great time for her to wake up.

My hands clamp down on Raela’s shoulders, pushing her back and away from me. Her head turns, following where I’m looking, and she sighs but doesn’t seem the least bit concerned at what Shae might have heard.

“You need to go,” I tell her.

“No, not until you promise me that you’ll leave here.”

“Not happening.” I need to get Raela out of here so I can tell Shae that whatever she heard, it wasn’t what she thinks. But I also can’t leave until we do what we came here to do.

“Volethos, listen to me,” she pleads. “Whatever you’re planning, Kurrahstka isn’t worth it.”

I take hold of her elbow and lead her to the door. “I disagree; now please go.”

The door slides open, and I walk her so she’s standing in the hallway. “Wait! Let me explain,” she begs. Her eyes are wide and pleading.

“I think you’ve explained plenty,” I tell her and let the door slide shut in her face.

CHAPTERNINETEEN

Shae

* * *

The hushed voices slowly pull me from the deep sleep I dropped into after Volethos made me come so hard I blacked out.

My legs slide together, and I stretch languidly, realizing that under the bedding I’m naked. Jesus, I can’t think of a single time in my life that I’ve ever come as hard as I did on Volethos’s magic fingers. The eyes that were watching us, the crowding bodies all vanished as the pleasure he gave completely consumed me.

My eyes flutter open, and I turn, expecting to find him next to me. But the bed is empty. He must be nearby, then. But no. I find him across the room. Chest to chest with a woman. The same woman from yesterday. Their lips are barely a breath apart. Their gazes heated.

“Because…because I still love you,” I hear her say, her voice deep and husky. And those words hit me like a club.

Well, fuck me.

Volethos’s back is mostly to me, so I can’t see his face, but I can imagine. The few times Raela has come up, I could tell there was a history between them. Hearing that she still loves him, well… How am I supposed to compete with that? Why do I want to?

With my throat burning and my heart breaking—which is stupid because it wasn’t supposed to fall for him in the first place—I gather a sheet around me and slide from the bed. I beeline for the bathroom and—after fiddling with the box above the door—I manage to lock it behind me.

“That motherfucker,” I growl as tears start to sting the backs of my eyes.

Bracing my hands on the vanity, I lean into the mirror, glaring at my reflection and warning myself not to cry. Gritting my teeth, I remind myself that he’s not worth it. That this is stupid. That Ido notcry!

“He was never your knight in shining armor,” I say. “He was never your anything. This was nothing more than an agreement. You weren’t supposed to get your feelings involved.”

When I squeeze my eyes shut, a fat tear escapes to run down my cheek, and I angrily brush it away. Only it’s immediately replaced with another. And another.

Ah, fuck…

My lips start to tremble, and next comes the first hiccupping sob as everything I’ve been through in the last weeks, or months—everything since being abducted—hits me.
