I run the sonic cleanser through two cycles before carrying her back to the bed, where I carefully tuck her under the soft blankets.

“Don’t go,” she says suddenly, reaching out to snag my hand when I turn away. I’d thought she was asleep already.

“RestImuri,” I whisper, brushing her short hair back from her forehead and placing a soft kiss there. “I’m not going far.”

She purses her lips like she wants to argue, but her eyes flutter closed and soon she’s lost to sleep.

For a moment I stand there, watching her. How could we have been so lucky to have found her. And what do we have to do to keep her?

With a long sigh, I slip out of the room and into the small room down the hall I’ve always shared with Vruk.

No longer. Now we sleep with Sasha.

I go to the drawers that hold my clothes and quickly dress. Then I head toward the cockpit, grabbing something to eat on the way.

Vruk gives me a smirk when I slip into the seat next to him.

“‘Bout time,” he chuckles. “I thought you were going to stay in bed all day.”

“Tempting,” I agree. “But she needs her rest if she’s going to keep up with our appetites.”

“That’s the truth,” Vruk snorts. “I almost went back to check on you, it sounded like you were killing each other.”

“I’d die happy, if that were the case.” I lean back in my chair and smile—really smile—the feeling pulling at my lips is foreign and yet…it feels good.

We lapsed into silence for a while. Both contemplating the good fortune we’ve run into by rescuing this strange female.

“So, what’s next?” I eventually ask.

“What do you mean?” Vruk says.

“Well, our original plan was to help her get back home. But—”But I don’t think we will be able to let her go now.

“But—,” he doesn’t look at me, instead he runs a finger across his lips and stares out the view screen into open space. “What if the plan hasn’t changed for her?”

My stomach knots even as I nod slowly. I don’t want to think about her leaving us anymore than I can imagine holding her here with us against her will.

Vruk starts punching coordinates into the display and a comm screen opens up. We sit in silence as the connecting dots flow across the screen before it flickers to reveal a dark-skinned male. He looks so much like our Sasha, that I assume he must be human as well.

His eyes dart between us before narrowing. “Can I help you, gentlemen?”

“We’re trying to contact Rovos,” Vruk tells him.

“Regarding?” A dark brow arches and the look he presents is questioning.

“We have rescued a human female,” I speak up. “We believe it is one he has been looking for.”

The male’s eyes widen, “One moment,” then the screen goes dark.

An eternity seems to pass before the screen flickers to life once more and a large Vesen appears before us.

“You’ve rescued a human female?” he says, without preamble.

Vruk and I exchange looks and then we both nod. This must be Rovos. His name is well known throughout the bounty hunter community; however we’ve never met him face to face before.

“Is she well?”

“She’s well,” I assure him. Then add, “She’s sleeping. We saw your missive, asking for information regarding the missing humans. We believe Sasha is part of the group of humans you’re looking for.”
