I motioned for him to be still and quiet while I listened.

The three Fae had stepped out the door into the sunshine. I wasn't sure if I felt a ripple of magic, or if that was nerves.

"Be ready," I signed.

Zared nodded, and his whole body tensed.

We had one shot at this. Miss it and…

We couldn't miss it.

"Okay, Tavian, lead the way," Ryze said.

"Yes, my Lord," Tavian said in a teasing tone.

I could almost see Ryze's eye roll.

I gestured to Zared. "Now."

We both shot to our feet and bolted to the door.

I had barely enough time to register Ryze's surprise, and the sight of Tavian stepping through the portal ahead of us, before Zared and I ran through it.

Vayne tried to grab me, but I swerved and avoided him before darting after Tavian.

"Son of a griffin-fucking whore," Vayne swore. "I told you—"

His words were cut off when we stepped out the other end of the portal.

Tavian didn't look so surprised to see Zared and I step out.

"Ryze isn't going to be happy," he remarked.

"Too bad," I replied. "They're my sisters. I couldn't stand by and do nothing."

"You could havesatby," Vayne growled as he stepped through the portal. "Standing was optional." He looked from me to Zared and back again, clearly trying to decide who he was the most angry at. "You're a pair of fucking idiots."

"That's approximately what I was going to say," Ryze said. He stepped through the portal and closed it behind him. "I should have ordered you to stay behind." He addressed that to both of us.

I shrugged. "You didn't, so here we are. Where is here?"

Ryze barked a short laugh. "You followed us, and we could have led you anywhere. Some would consider that foolish."

"You would have ended up ‘anywhere’ too," I pointed out. "We trust the plan isn't to get yourselves killed."

"She's got you there." Tavian grinned. "This is the edge of the Spring Court. The Summer Court is over that hill."

We stood in a copse of trees, most covered in flowers in a riot of colours. All of them exuded a perfume so strong it was almost overwhelming.

"I should open a portal and send you right back," Ryze growled.

"Yes, you should," Vayne told him. "Zared can start a hundred years of cleaning toilets."

"I'm human, I won't live for a hundred years," Zared pointed out.

"We'll find a way," Vayne said darkly.

"I'm not going back." I tilted my chin and looked at Ryze defiantly. "I need to be here, helping."
