"I apologise for sidetracking you both, but I believe you have something I need."

"Oh really?" Cavan asked. "What might that be?" He crossed his arms and kept himself between me and the Spring Court Fae.

"You can try to pretend you don't know, but we both know you do," Wornar said.

"Humour me," Cavan said. He looked completely unmoved.

"The key to Nallis." Wornar's tone was as friendly as ever, although his eyes spoke of his impatience.

"What about it?" I asked.

"I know you have it," he said.

"So what if we do?" Cavan asked. "What would you need it for? Are you planning to open the place yourself?"

"It doesn't matter what I need it for," he said. "Only that I need it and you have it." He held out his hand. "No one needs to get hurt here today."

"I don't know about that," I said. "You're here demanding a key we may or may not have, and you're not telling us why. If you're so sure we have it, then you'd know the reason for that. If you do, then you wouldn't want to stop us."

Wornar stepped around Cavan, who moved to keep himself between us. He grunted softly.

"That might be exactly why I'm here. To keep anyone from opening that place."

"Why?" I asked. "It seems to me the sooner we deal with those courts, the better."

"Or we can keep them contained where they are," Wornar said. "Thiron agrees it's better to leave them alone. He wants me to get the keys so we can hide them. We’ll find a way to stop them from waking."

"Unless you haven't been paying attention, it's already started," Cavan said. "Our best allies against the shadows might be the Court of Dreams."

Wornar shook his head. "Thiron doesn't want to take the risk. Give me the key."

"No," Cavan said.

"Then you leave me no choice," Wornar said. He looked around at me and said, "Take his knife and slide it between his ribs."

I shook my head and tried to back away, but the alpha-order settled on me. I didn't even have time to fight it before I was slipping Cavan's knife out from the sheath at his hip and driving it into him.

Warm blood spurted over my hand, coating my fingers. I let out a sob.

Gods, no, no, no.

My eyes were wide, staring. This couldn't be happening. None of it. I felt like I was watching myself through the eyes of someone else.

But I wasn’t. I had done this. Me, because being an omega meant I had to obey.

Somehow…somehow this was all my fault.

Cavan's eyes widened in surprise and pain. His knees started to buckle.

Wornar grabbed him and held him up long enough to slip his hands into his pockets. He searched for a few moments until he turned up the key.

"Let the hilt of the knife go and come with me," he ordered.

Hot tears ran down my face. Every part of me was screaming not to do what he wanted me to do. My movements stiff and tight, I moved towards Wornar.

"Asshole," I ground out.

"Quiet," he ordered. His words were like a choker around my throat.

I tried to growl and found I couldn't even do that.

I was a Silent Maiden again.

Cavan dropped to his knees, his hand around the blade of the knife. His fingers were covered in blood. Eyes wide with pain and fury.

I could only mouth his name before the order forced me to follow Wornar out the door.
