“No, she has a friend with her. Do you want me to go in too?”
Normally he didn’t like to be with female patients alone if he could avoid it. It was a protection for the patient and the doctor.
“No, we’ll be good,” he said. Casey said friend, not guy or boyfriend or spouse.
He turned to that room and opened the door and came face to face with Daisy. She was sitting in the chair to the side facing the door. She was laughing along with Heather and they stopped when he entered.
“Hi, Dr. James,” Heather said. “You remember Daisy?”
“Your roommate, right?”
“Yes,” Heather said. “She wanted to come and see how my cast came off. If it's coming off today.”
If he found that odd, he didn’t let on. “It will be coming off today,” he said. “Do you want to see the results of your X-rays?”
“Yes, please,” Heather said. Daisy did a little fist pump out of the corner of his eye. This was interesting.
Theo pulled his laptop closer that was on the small rollable table and lowered it to Heather’s eye level. Daisy had gotten up and moved closer and he caught a whiff of something sweet and floral. He’d always smelled it on Heather too, but Daisy had something else on her.
It was pleasant and citrus too.
“That is so cool,” Daisy said. “Look at the metal in your leg. Is that titanium or stainless steel? That’s the biggest piece I’ve ever seen at once.”
“Titanium,” he said. “Built to last.” He turned back to Heather. “As you can see, everything is healed up nicely.” He pointed out where the other bone had been broken. “You’ve got a few choices. You can put a walking boot on that will go up to your knee. It will cushion your leg while walking, but you can ditch the crutches.”
“How long will I need that for?”
“A few weeks to a month,” he said. “Maybe less. Depends on how good of a patient you are.”
“She’s a great patient,” Daisy said. “I’m like a nun with a ruler in my hand if she’s doing anything she shouldn’t be.”
He wasn’t sure why a sexy nun outfit popped into his head and he was mortified that it had and hoped to hell his face didn’t turn red.
“She is one,” Heather said. “What is my other option?”
“No walking boot but you’ll still be on crutches for two more weeks. This will allow your leg to get some air, but I will give you a different type of brace that I’d like you to wear that isn’t as bulky. It’s more for if you accidentally put your foot down it gives you some protection while you build up your strength. Which you’re going to need to do regardless of exercises that a physical therapist will give you.”
Heather pouted. “I need PT?”
“Just a few sessions,” he said. “You seem pretty smart so I’m sure you’ll catch on. Again, if you’re a good patient and you build up strength in your tendons and ligaments, you can go to one crutch in two weeks or so. This is more so you don’t injure yourself another way as opposed to the bone.”
“Oh,” Heather said. “Got it. I think I’ll take the second option. I’m sick of trying to wear clothes over the cast and then worrying about a boot.”
“The boot can go over your pants.”
“Just the same, I’d like a different fashion statement.”
Heather was in long tan shorts and a white T-shirt. Daisy on the other hand had on floral printed pants that were fitted to her legs and stopped at her ankles. She had on a pair of peach wedge-type shoes that were sturdy but sexy at the same time.
There was a matching peach sweater on top and it went great with her brown hair and light tan.
Theo knew he shouldn’t be noticing these things, but he couldn’t help it.
The same as he couldn’t help but notice the rings on Daisy’s fingers. One hand had two bulky bright stones that were massive. The other had a ring with a rose on it, a ruby in the center.
There was also a necklace that could be considered a choker, but he couldn’t see the design on that. Where Heather seemed almost simple and classic in her clothing, Daisy was the opposite. Bright and cheerful, like the smile on her face.
“Then that is what we’ll do,” he said. “I just need to get the saw and we’ll get this off of you.”
