“No,” he said. “No more than dust and debris, but it’s a pain to get out of my pants.”

She looked at his pants again. He had some long legs on him. The lab coat only covered him to mid thigh, but he buttoned it up and then sat down as he moved the stool closer to Heather.

The lab coat was pretty much covering his pants now and her eyes drifted to his black shoes. They looked more like sneakers but dressy ones.

“Do you need me to hold your hand?” she asked Heather. “If I do I can get a better look at what is going on.”

“Only if you have safety goggles on,” the doctor said. He’d pulled a pair out of his jacket. “We don’t want any debris flying into your eye. Heather, why don’t you lie down and get comfortable? It won’t hurt, I promise. It will be fast.”

Daisy pouted. She did want to watch this.

Dr. James looked over at her, gave her a smile, then moved his stool over to a drawer, opened it and pulled out another pair of goggles.

“Here you go.”

She reached her hand for them, their fingers brushed and she fought damn hard not to gasp over the heat that she just experienced. Didn’t seem like he noticed or felt it. Bummer.

Not that she thought he would, but hey, a girl could dream.

The saw started, she looked at Heather who was gripping her hand tightly, her eyes shut. “It’s going to be fine,” Daisy said quietly, but she was too busy watching the good-looking doctor bring the saw down one side of Heather’s cast.

“How are you doing?” he asked, looking up at Heather quickly.

“Good,” Heather said. “Are you done?”

He laughed. “Not yet, but it won’t be long. You should only feel a vibration.”

“That’s it?” Heather asked.

“You can tell Luke how brave you were. That’s why you let me come,” Daisy said. “I know. You didn’t want him to see this.”

Heather only grunted and she’d take that as a yes.

“One side is done,” Dr. James said. He set the saw down and started to wiggle the cast some. She thought he might try to separate it like she did her molds and pull it down Heather’s leg, but it didn’t seem to want to go.

He turned the saw back on and did the other side, this time faster now that Heather wasn’t flinching.

The saw went off and the back of the cast fell off, Dr. James grabbing the top half.

“Oh my God,” she said. “Your leg looks like it’s been in the water for ten years.”

“What?” Heather asked, screeching, then sitting up. “Urgh. That’s horrible.”

Dr. James smiled. “Completely normal. Your muscle is smaller and needs to build up strength. That is what the physical therapy will do.”

“How much is it going to hurt when I try to put weight on it?”

“You need to start stretching the ligaments more. I’ll see if we can get you into PT tomorrow if your schedule allows it. If not, it will have to wait until Monday.”

“Hopefully tomorrow,” Heather said.

“I can bring you if you need it,” Daisy said. “Rose told me to take the time I need.”

“I’m sure I can drive myself,” Heather said. “I’ve been doing that for weeks, but well, I didn’t want to come here alone.”

“You did well,” Dr. James said, patting Heather’s hand. “Grab your crutches and stand up. Let’s see how you do.”

“Really?” Heather said.
