“What are you doing home?” she asked when Heather walked in. Holy crap. Yeah, this had to stop when she felt the guilt creep up her neck. She could just tell her now, but she wasn’t prepared. Then she wondered why she needed to be prepared for it.

Heather was looking at her all dressed up and she was glad she didn’t have her purse in her hand. “Did you work late?” Heather asked. “I thought you got out at five?”

“Yeah,” Daisy lied and hated herself for it. What happened to her wanting to tell Heather? It’s just Heather didn’t look…right to her. “I got held up working with a few customers.”

“Oh,” Heather said. “Luke just got called into work.”

“Why do you look so white over it?” she asked. She moved closer to Heather and was glad that her best friend didn’t notice that she was dressed up more than if she was working in the store.

“Because they called him in as a sniper,” Heather said. “And he had to gear up, and just watching that was like something out of a movie. I think seeing it in person is different than not knowing. If that makes sense.”

“It does,” she said. Now she was glad she didn’t tell Heather. This was about her best friend, not her insecurities in her love life. “You probably ate, right? Did you have your coffee?”

“No,” Heather said. “I didn’t.”

“Then let me make us our coffee and we’ll wait together. Did he say what was going on?” There was no way she was leaving Heather right now. She’d be there for her best friend.

“I’ll make the coffee while you change,” Heather said. “Thank you for being here for me. And you didn’t eat if you just got home. I’ll get snacks.”

“I’ll always be there for you,” she said. She rushed to her room, glad her phone was in her hand and she hadn’t put it in her purse yet.

She texted Theo right away and said that she had to cancel, that Heather came home unexpectedly and she was upset over Luke being called in and why.

It was a long text, but she wanted him to know she wasn’t canceling because her best friend might have found out she was going on a date.

The truth was, if Heather hadn’t looked so white just now, she would have told her she had a date and then it would be the opening she needed to explain it all.

But she knew it wasn’t the time for that and was glad she went with her gut and lied. Even if she hated to lie to begin with.

She started to undress and found comfy sweats and a shirt to put on. Her phone went off and she grabbed it to see Theo saying he understood and to keep him posted if she could.

She appreciated he understood and wasn’t mad. It was a good thing she hadn’t told Theo she’d planned on staying the night. That was going to be her surprise and luckily she hadn’t brought her bag out of her room yet. She’d been getting it ready when she heard the door open.

Heather had both cups of coffee made and on the island when she came out. “I’m looking for some cookies or chips. I need something while I try to figure out what is going on.”

“I just looked on Facebook,” Daisy said. She did that in her room so that she had a reason for taking as long as she had to change. “There was a breaking news thing about something going on at the casino.”

“That is about right,” Heather said. “Luke told them he’d be there in twenty minutes or less. Which means he was going to be breaking speed records getting there since he’d taken about five minutes to get geared up.”

Foxwoods wasn’t that far from Mystic. About twenty minutes depending on traffic.

“Let’s hunker in and see if we can follow the news,” she said. “I’m sure Luke is going to be fine. Don’t snipers normally hide away where no one can see or reach them? That’s part of their job.”

“I guess,” Heather said. “I only know what is on TV.”

“You could text Violet or Lily and ask them to find out from Trace or Zane. I bet they know what might be going on too.”

Violet’s fiancé, Trace, and Lily’s husband, Zane, had both been in the Army with Luke. Luke and Zane were best of friends. She thought maybe they might have some connections or know what was going on.

“I don’t know if they’d know any more than us, but I wouldn’t bother them either. I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. Until then, let’s see if we can find something on the news.”

The next morning, Daisy heard Heather moving earlier than normal. She figured her friend was still nervous since they hadn’t heard anything last night.

She’d finally fallen asleep around eleven. Theo was still up and he said he was catching up on work. Guess he would have put that off to have dinner with her and maybe it was a good thing she hadn’t surprised him to spend the night.

She’d have to talk to him and see if it would be okay with him rather than assume. At least during the week.

“Is it over?” she asked Heather when she walked into the kitchen.
