After he was on the road for a few minutes, he hit the buttons on his screen and the phone started to ring.

His mother answered, her voice loud over the speakers. “Why didn’t you tell me you were dating someone? And how is it not only does everyone know but me, but they’ve met her?”

He figured that was the bigger issue. “It hasn’t come up,” he said.

“I talk to you once a week,” his mother said. “Harmony said you’ve been dating this woman for months.”

“You never asked me,” he said. He knew it was a lame excuse. “You always have an agenda of other things to talk about and then we hang up.”

Mainly he hung up because he got sick of listening to his mother complain about his sisters.

“You could have easily said it any time. Her name is Daisy and she is a jewelry designer, Harmony said.”

He knew his younger sister would have talked Daisy up because it’s what his mother would want. She wouldn’t want to do any harm, but it was not how Theo would have handled this either.

“She makes and designs jewelry for Blossoms.”

“Is that a jewelry store in the area?” his mother asked.

He should have figured his mother wouldn’t have a clue as to what Blossoms was. Their products were not something she’d wear or purchase.

“No,” he said. “They make lotions, soaps, candles, accessories.”

“So not much of a jewelry designer if it’s just accessories. Figures your sister was lying to me.”

“She isn’t lying,” he said. “Stop jumping the gun and let me explain. If you paid attention to things or let me talk.”

“Don’t get snippy with me,” his mother said. “The more time you spend with your siblings and your father the more you do this.”

“Mom,” he said. “If you want to know what is going on then you’ll let me talk. Otherwise I’ve got other things in my life to frustrate me.”

There was silence on the other end. Whenever he called his mother out on her behavior she’d stop as if she didn’t realize she was doing it. “I’m sorry. You’re right. I’m only looking out for what is best for you like I’ve always done for all my kids.”

“We know,” he said. “But we are adults now. You did your job raising us and now you have to go on the knowledge that you did a good job and we’ll make the right choices in life.”

“That’s right,” his mother said. “I did a wonderful job with you three, but you don’t always make the best decisions.”

Even when he tried to play the peacemaker and compliment his mother or defuse situations she still had to turn it around to the negative.

“Everyone has to do what feels right to them and if it’s wrong we learn from it,” he said. “Just like you did in life. Enough of that. Blossoms has a line of jewelry. Some accessory pieces are done at their manufacturing plant and then some higher-end pieces are sold in department stores. They do custom pieces and have a bridal line. Daisy just made a stunning engagement ring for her best friend.”

“I’ll have to look into it,” his mother said.

“Do that,” he said. “The point is, she’s a designer and is wonderful at her craft. She’s very talented.”

“How did you meet?” his mother asked.

He knew this wouldn’t turn out well but wouldn’t lie either.

“Remember that woman from the car accident months ago? The one that I witnessed?”

“Yes,” his mother said. “Where you were foolish and almost gave me a heart attack trying to be a hero.”

He let out a big breath. “That is Daisy’s best friend. I met her at the hospital and when Daisy brought Heather to appointments. A few months went by and we ran into each other picking up food one night. I got her number and asked her out.”

“You asked her out, not the other way around? She’s not trying to latch onto some doctor?”

And this was where things would get tricky. “No. I love her.”
