“See? He deserved it.” Felix’s grin grew even wider. “All the better reason for you to come with me.”

“And why the hell would I do that?” she asked, raising a skeptical brow. But she did keep a mental note of the compliment for later.

“Well, for one, I’m a little too old to pull such luscious locks,” a devilish look crossed the man’s face. “Unless you want that of course. Always happy to oblige a kink.” He laughed at the bemused expression that undoubtedly crossed her face. “Secondly, your friend needs you.”

“Ryn? What happened? Is she here? Where is she?”

Felix shook his head. “Okay,” Felix dragged out the word as he shook his head. “That was a lot, but I’ll answer in order. One, yes. Two, far too much to explain at this moment. Three, nope. Four, with the shifters she’s oh so fond of.”

“Why isn’t she here?”

“Like I said, too much to explain at this moment. Let’s just say, it's not safe for her here at the moment. And from the looks of the gentleman you so eloquently pummeled, it's probably not all that safe for you either.”

“And what if I refuse to go with you?”

Felix shrugged. “Well, normally I’d just leave you to try out that nice little purple thingy on anyone else that decided to come in and try to capture you.”

“But let me guess, you won’t be so magnanimous this time?”

“Unfortunately not. You see, I have this task to help save Ryn. And you very well may be the ticket to doing that. So, you see, I can’t give you a choice in coming with me or not.”

“Saving her?” Ness dropped all bravado. “What the hell happened? Is she okay?”

“I already told you, too much to explain at the moment,” the man threw his arms up in the air in an exaggerated manner before dropping them back to his sides. “Seriously, I might as well have just explained it at this point. Either way, no she’s not okay. And she gets less okay by the moment, so if you don’t mind, it’s time to go.”

“And where are we going exactly?”

“To the shifters. Really woman, I expected you to be able to keep up better than this.” Felix reached for her, but Ness side stepped, swinging her arching shield in front of her.

Felix rolled his eyes and reached for her with a glowing green hand. Before she knew it sparks had scattered once more across the room, but this time no shield remained in their place. Felix wrapped his hand around her forearm, gripping tightly.

“Hold on.”

???

Felix

No matter how many times he’d seen humans struggle after traveling through shadows it never ceased to amaze him. The gorgeous red head before him folded to shag carpet beneath her, coughing and choking as she struggled to pull air back into her lungs.

“Deep breaths in through your nose. That’s it.”

“What the hell did you do to me?” Ness seethed through a cough. She looked up around her, taking in the mobile home they’d landed in. “And where the hell is Zane?”

“Outside like a good puppy should be.”

Growls could be heard from outside the junkyard they had the audacity to call a home. Felix laughed. “Ah, I love the sound dogs make when they’re upset. It's just so cute.”

“Felix!” Marik’s voice cut through the brevity like a knife.

“Who the hell is he?” Ness asked, tilting her head toward the towering arch demon standing next to the unconscious girl on the single military cot.

“Yes, yes, sorry. Vanessa Hawthorne, meet…”

Before Felix could finish Ness gasped, shooting to her feet to rush past Marik to Ryn’s side, the curve of her ass peaking above the back slit of her medical gown.

“What happened? Why is she like this?”

Felix sighed. “Marik, his name is Marik. Marik, meet Ness.”
