The green-eyed beauty glared at him before returning her attention to her friend. “I don’t remember giving you permission to call me that.”

“Don’t need permission when it’s the preferred name on your candidate profile.”

Felix…Marik’s growl crowded out the thoughts in Felix’s mind.

But she’s cute when she’s riled.

Later you can flirt with her, fuck her, whatever you want. But right now she has a task.

Felix sighed. Fine.

And for the love of the Gods, find her some clothes before long.

Giving in to the woman’s confusion, Felix explained what had happened to Ryn. But before he could finish Ness threw her hand out to the side, cutting him off mid explanation.

“No, I need to know everything. What happened after I lost consciousness.”

“You were taken down to the infirmary. A fellow candidate, Miss Arison I believe, healed you.”

Ness snorted, reminding Felix of an adorable little teacup pig. “Penny did not heal me.”

“Well, that’s what she claims at least.”

“She’s lying,” Ness replied flippantly.

“Oh?”

“Yeah, Ryn did that.”

“How do you know?” Felix asked. “She was assigned to heal Acton Fitzson.”

“She didn’t heal Acton,” Ness replied, her face furrowing in momentary contemplation. “Well, maybe she did. But then she killed him.”

“How do you know that?” It was Marik’s turn to ask the girl a question.

“Listen, I don’t know why I’m telling you guys this. I shouldn’t be saying shit.”

“If you want your friend to live, you really should.”

“Is that a threat?” Ness asked, her focused stare reminding Felix of a hellcat’s. There was something there in the harsh way her green eyes darkened and remained entirely unblinking.

“I would do nothing to endanger her.” Marik replied.

Ness relaxed a bit, releasing her stare to return it to her arm. She raised it up, her forearm glowing with the lavender sheen of earlier.

“I know she killed him because of this,” she waved the shield back and forth before lowering her arm. Her brow crinkled momentarily, the dispelling of the shield a focused effort rather than a practiced habit.

“Explain,” Marik insisted.

Ness sighed again. “I really don’t know why I’m telling you any of this, but I just feel like I must. Okay, so I wasn’t born a mind manipulator.”

“You weren’t?” Felix asked.

Ness shook her head. “No. I’ve always had a strong connection to greed, my natural talents being to amplify desires. But it wasn’t until I was twelve that I first connected with sloth and learned to manipulate minds.”

“Casters can formulate powers into their teens, can’t they?”

“They can, but it’s more learning nuances to the virtues or sins they already connect to. I was only connected to greed, not even a single tiny filament of connection to anything else. But when I was twelve, I suddenly connected to sloth. It wasn’t a natural connection, but to keep the gift Ryn gave me the connection had to be forged. It’s stuck ever since.”
