He scowls and goes to strike me, but I dodge quickly, and he falls on the floor. I can't help but giggle as his fellow guards rush to pick him up, especially when I spot his key card on the floor. I move my foot over it, bend down, and pick it up before he's even turned his head.

Liz shoots me a discreet glance, and we share a knowing smile. The taste of determination and resolve fills my mouth as I realize this key card could be a vital tool in our quest for escape.

"You're in trouble now," says another guard just as I slip the key card inside my top.

"Get her," says Webos.

I stand proud as the guards surround me.

"So, it's going to take three of you to spank my ass," I say, flicking out my hip.

Webos stands over me, towering high. The tension mounts as Webos clenches his fists.

"Webos," shouts Tebos, interrupting our little moment. "It's fight time. Bring your crew."

Fight time? They couldn't be possibly making Champ fight again, could they? Not in his condition.

Tebos blows a whistle, and the other guards sprint towards their leader.

"You got lucky," says Webos, poking me in the shoulder. "This isn't finished."

"Whatever you say, Webos," I say, trying to make his name sound as much like Eggs as I can without cracking up (excuse the pun).

A new set of guards turn up and send us back to digging, but none know about my key card. As we continue our daily chores, images of Champ battling against another monster consume me. I can't just wait here while they send him to his doom.

A scream echoes from the tower, and I glance at Liz.

"That could have been me," she says, her eyes misting over.

"Could have, but wasn't. We got lucky."

"Thanks again."

"Don't mention it. Like I said, that's one-one. You scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours."

"Deal. My turn next."

"In that case, I need another favor," I say.

"What is it this time?" asks Liz, frowning. "What the hell have you got planned?"

"Come closer and let me fill you in," I say as a blast of nerves erupt in my chest.

Chapter 7

___________

Champ

The suffocating air stifles my breathing as two Zebos guards lead me down a tunnel toward the Gladiator ring. My back has healed thanks to Stella's ointment, but my arms, chest, and thighs still ache from the last brutal fight against Hark.

I'll have to dig deep and find extra strength to fight my next opponent so that I can see Stella again.

"Did you see that woman Fej took?" one guard asks the other, his voice filled with intrigue.

"Yeah, I saw her," the second guard replies, excitement evident in his tone. "She was feisty and put up a fight. My kind of female human."

I hope they're not talking about who I think they're talking about.
