I frown. “Excuse me?”

“She told me all about you and how her boyfriend lives next door.”

“She did?” I raise my eyebrows in surprise. “Did she?” I rub my car as I think of something to say. “So she told you this because . . . I’m guessing you asked her out?”

“I was going to.” He shrugs sadly. “But she told me about you and her first.”

I inwardly roll my eyes. Of course she did. Uses me as a scapegoat for rejecting this poor pathetic bastard.

This woman is the living end.

“I just want to make sure you know how special she is.” He shrugs.

“She’s definitely special, all right.” I smile through gritted teeth.

Especially fucking annoying.

I widen my eyes as I keep drying the car.

Unbelievable.

“Look after her, hey?” he asks.

I fake a smile. “I will. Thanks for coming over. Nice to meet you, Warren.”

Go home, loser.

“Goodbye,” he says. I watch him walk back to Juliet’s house as smoke begins to steam from my ears.

I sit in the golf garden in the middle of the cul-de-sac while the boys play cards and have a few beers. I’m too angry to play.

“What’s up with you?” Blake asks.

“Nothing.” I sip my beer, distracted by the laughter coming from Juliet’s house.

What’s so fucking funny in there, anyway?

“Please tell me you’ve nailed Juliet again?”

I roll my eyes. “No, I have not nailed Juliet again, because she is my neighbor. And everyone in the civilized world knows you do not give the bone to your neighbor.” I sip my beer, disgusted.

“I don’t see the problem; we all fucked our neighbors in college,” Bennet replies.

“It was a frat house,” I mutter dryly. “And we were completely out of control.”

“Well, if you’re not going to make a move . . .”

“Forget it,” I snap. “She’s off the table.”

“But if she isn’t on your table?”

“She isn’t on yours either.” I glare at him. “Last warning.”

“Fucking hell, calm down,” Blake scoffs. “What’s the issue with this girl, anyway?”

I screw up my face in disgust at this conversation. “Nothing.”

We sit for a few minutes in silence.
