From the corner of my eye, I see something move and turn to see Juliet’s mangy dog up on my white outdoor couch as if he owns the place, fast asleep on his back and snoring. He’s covered in mud from where he dug under the fence to get into my yard.
I inhale sharply and clench my fists at my side. “Motherfucker.”
Adrenaline surges through my body.
I walk over to the snoring dog and glare down at him as I imagine his grisly end. “What did you do?” I growl.
He keeps snoring, and I see red.
Calm down.
I inhale deeply as I look around at the disaster zone.
I’m livid.
“Barry,” I hear Juliet call from next door. “Barry, where are you?”
The dumb dog lifts its head up when it hears her voice and then flops it back down to sleep again.
My eyes flicker red as thermal nuclear energy threatens to steal my control.
Before I can stop myself, I find myself marching to Juliet’s. I push open her side gate.
“Barry,” she calls from her back steps.
“Juliet,” I scream as I lose all control. “Get your fucking ass over here!”
Chapter 9
Juliet
“What?” I screw up my face.
“You heard me,” Henley growls from his place at my side gate. “Get the fuck over to my house now and see what your fucking fleabag has done.”
“You are so dramatic. Are you going for an Oscar or something?” I huff. I march past him through the gate and over to his house. The gate is open, and I walk around into his backyard.
My eyes widen in horror.
Oh no.
Mud as far as the eye can see, tipped-over pots, chewed plants, torn-up couch cushions.
I put my hands on my hips, indignant. “Well, how do you know it was Barry?”
Henley looks at me deadpan. “Open your eyes.”
I glance around to see Barry asleep on his back on the white couch.
Fuck me dead.
“Barry,” I scold him.
Barry sits up and pricks his ears, all happy-like.
“Don’t smile at me, young man. You are in trouble.” I try to sound tough and convincing.
“First of all, he’s not a man, he’s a mutt. And second of all, clean this shit up. Right fucking now,” Henley demands with his hands on his hips.
