Megan

Iwishmyheartwould stop racing as I pull my car into the parking lot where the engagement party is taking place. I should have been there to set things up and make sure it was prepared properly, but Mr. Evans told me not to worry about that. He would deal with everything. All I had to do was turn up and check on everything before leaving again.

Mr. Evans. Joel. I don’t know if I can call him that. Not when it sends a warm shiver through my body. It reminds me of the kisses we’ve shared, how his hands have touched me and made me want more.

Especially in the office. I still can’t believe that Joel did that, or that I wanted him to actually fuck me on my desk. Anyone could have come in - hell, the vice president’s office is just across the hall - and all I wanted was to have my boss’ hands all over my body as he brought me to orgasm.

It’s been very difficult to sleep with that going on in my head. I can’t get rid of it.

And that’s another reason for coming at this hour. Less time interacting with Joel. I know if we’re alone for any period of time, I’m going to end up getting distracted more than usual. Before, I was able to keep my composure and carry on as normal. Now I know that he desires me in return…

If only things were simpler.

Getting out of the car, I look down and adjust my shirt. I’m not interested in dressing up to look good for everyone; after all, this is my ex-boyfriend’s engagement party to my boss’ daughter. Just a simple black blouse and black pants with flat-heeled pumps. Nothing to make me stand out, with minimal makeup and my hair tied back. I could pass for a member of staff working the event.

Anything to keep me in the background.

If I had my way, I wouldn’t be here at all, but Anna and Eric had insisted that I come. They’re planning something, I know that much. I just wish I knew what. They probably want to rub this affair in my face and remind me what I lost out on.

Some people just don’t grow up past high school. Anna is living proof of it. And Eric… Well, gold diggers are scum in my eyes when they’re unrepentant about it. It makes me wonder how long it’ll take before Anna realizes that stealing my boyfriend isn’t going to end well with her when the money dries up. And because of her penchant for shopping, she wouldn’t have much left soon.

There’s movement in the doorway as I approach the restaurant, and it makes me slow down. If that’s Anna, I don’t want to have an interaction with her. That bitch knows how to make me feel like shit just by looking at me.

But it’s not Anna. A dark-haired woman steps out of the shadows and gives me a smile.

“Hey, Megan.”

“Natalie.” Glad to see a familiar face, I join her and we share a hug. “I’m so relieved to see you.”

“I was thinking you’d be here earlier,” Natalie squeezes me and steps back. “But Dad said you’d be late. I’m surprised you came at all.”

“Anna and Eric won’t stop harassing me, and I just want to make it stop for one night,” I shrug.

Natalie frowns and narrows her eyes at me. “You do know how to block numbers, don’t you?”

“Of course I do. They also know how to use different numbers to contact me,” I grimace, still pissed off that they’d stoop to that level. “I shudder to think how much they’re spending by getting new numbers all the time.”

“I’m sorry about my sister,” Natalie grumbles. “I knew she was a bitch and I should’ve warned you…”

“It’s not your fault. Nobody could have anticipated that she would do this. And you’re not her keeper,” I give Natalie a small smile. “At least I know you’re decent. I think your dad would be pissed if you were the same.”

“I would rather have Mom pissed at me than Dad. He makes it scarier,” she says with a laugh.

“I concur.” I look up at the restaurant. “I wish I knew what Anna and Eric want me here for. Not knowing is driving me crazy.”

“I tried asking them, but Anna said it was a surprise,” Natalie says with an offhand shrug. “I have no idea what’s happening, either. Dad is just as concerned. He believes something bad is going to happen.”

That makes me want to go home. But my curiosity is making me stay, and I really wish it didn’t.

I take a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Okay, let’s go in. I told myself just an hour, at the very most, and then I’m gone.”

“Are you sure?” Natalie asks. “You can stay until you know what Anna is up to and then leave. That won’t take an hour.”

I nod, giving her arm a grateful squeeze. “I might do that instead.”

Natalie smiles and links her arm through mine. “Dad and I will look after you. It’ll be fine.”

I don’t believe her about things being fine, but I’m glad that Natalie and Joel are on my side. I’m not looking forward to this at all and having them here makes me breathe a little easier.
