“Of course I didn’t sleep with Eric,” she replies. “I would never do that. When someone is in a relationship, they’re off-limits.”

At least one of my daughters has boundaries. It’s a shame both of them do not think the same way. I turn in my chair when I hear the bathroom door open and Megan finally comes out, running her hands through her hair. She’s loosened it between entering the bathroom and now.

I avert my eyes and avoid looking at Megan. I can tell she is self-conscious. “I’ll talk to you later, Natalie.”

“Okay. Let me know if you want me to yell at Anna. I’m happy to do that,” she says with a bitter chuckle.

I don’t respond, and simply hang up. Somehow, I think that Natalie scolding her older sister isn't going to have the desired effect.

Putting my phone on the desk, I shift my focus to Megan who is looking pale, her expression distracted. Her hair is falling over one shoulder, looking soft and silky against her shirt. Not for the first time, I wonder what her hair would feel like if I ran my fingers through it. And that skirt is hugging her curves in all the right places.

Gosh, what are you thinking now? She’s just found out her boyfriend’s been cheating on her and she’s been dumped. Is this the right time for that?

I push my thoughts aside, but it’s not easy. They’re always on the cusp of coming out whenever Megan is around. She is damn sexy and she doesn’t even try.

Now isn't the time to be thinking that, though. I really need to stop thinking with my dick.

Getting to my feet, I move toward her. “How are you feeling?”

“A little better. I think.” Megan grimaces as she absently rubs her flat belly. “I don’t know whether to eat or be sick. My stomach’s giving me mixed signals.”

I chuckle softly. She’s so adorable. “You need to have something sugary if you can’t handle any food.”

“I don’t know if I can manage with that, if I’m honest,” she says, shaking her head.

“Well, if you don’t want to keel over on me, I suggest you get yourself a coffee at least.” I allow myself to lightly touch her arm. “You’ve had a shock, after all.”

I notice that she flinches a little before stepping away from me, giving me a tiny smile before it disappears again.

“I’ll be fine, Mr. Evans,” she says briskly. “I’ll just get back to work.”

“It’s your lunch break, remember?” I remind her.

Her face turns a light shade of green and she looks like she’s about to be sick again. “I’m not hungry, anyway. I’ll order something for you.”

“Then get something for yourself too,” I tell her as she walks toward the door. “I’ll pay for whatever you want. You can have the biggest bar of chocolate you can find for lunch, and I’ll pay for it.”

Megan glances back at me, and I see the look of bemusement. I’m not sure how to be helpful toward someone when they’ve been cheated on; it’s not something I’m used to. After staring at me for a while, Megan gives me the tiniest of smiles again.

“I’ll see what I can do, Mr. Evans,” she says with a slight nod.

I let out a slow breath. At least I didn’t fuck that up. “And after that, you can go home.”

But she shakes her head, her hair shimmering about her face. “No, I’ll carry on working. I need something to do. Distraction.”

I can tell that she’s not going to be swayed on this. One thing I’ve learned about Megan since she started working for me, is that she can be stubborn. I know she is going to ignore me on this, and I won’t be able to convince her otherwise.

Sighing, I put my hands up in surrender. “Okay, fine. I can’t stop you. But I will allow you to leave work early, if you want.”

“I’ll leave the office when you do,” she says. “How about that?”

“Then I’ll make sure I head home early for a change,” I manage a sincere smile. “You don’t have to be strong, Megan. You’re allowed to go home and scream into a pillow.”

We stare at each other. Somehow, I can feel something crackling in the air, and it’s making the hairs on my arms stand up. This happens every time we’re in the same room, and I find myself getting distracted whenever I look at Megan. She’s always on top of things, working when she’s supposed to and looking like the perfect PA. She never does anything else when she’s at the office. I should not have to worry about her.

And yet, I’m the one who can’t focus when I let my thoughts drift away.

Finally, Megan gives me a twitch of her mouth and nods. “Okay. Whatever you want to do, Mr. Evans.”
