“Trust me, I’m going to make sure that she pays for all of Megan’s medical bills.”

Clark snorts. “Megan should sue for all the pain and suffering that she’s gone through. That bitch shouldn’t walk away from anything.”

I don’t respond. I know Clark is angry, and while I agree with him, ranting about suing isn’t going to help anyone right now. Clark runs a hand through his hair.

“So, it’s really true that Megan is pregnant?”

“She is.” I’m nodding, but the news is still sinking in for me too.

“And it’s yours?”

“Yes,” I fold my arms. “She’s not sleeping with anyone else, as far as I know.”

“Unlike some people, she’s not like that,” Clark regards me closely. “She loves you, Mr. Evans. She won’t openly admit it, but she does love you. You’d better not hurt her like your daughter has.”

It takes a moment for me to realize what he’s just said. Megan loves me? I figured that we were strongly attracted to each other and she cares for me, but I didn’t think she loves me. Now my mind has gone blank.

“I… I don’t know what to say.”

He smiles at me. “Well, I’m not about to tell you what to do…”

“But I’m sure you are anyway.”

Clark shrugs. “Megan’s my sister. I want to make sure she’s safe and happy. She needs that after Eric screwed her over. Do you think you can do that for her?”

“Of course I can.”

I can safely say that without hesitation. If Megan gives me a chance, I will make sure she’s always happy.

“You’d better keep that promise,” he says. “I don’t want Megan coming to us crying because you hurt her.”

“I promise you that I won’t do that.”

Clark stares at him for a moment. Then he abruptly moves toward the door. “I’m going on a run. If you want me to pick some donuts or something on the way back, I can do that.”

“I… Sure.” Somehow, talking about donuts leaves me struggling for words. That isn't what I’d expected. “Whatever you want to do.”

“Well, Megan’s been asking for donuts quite a bit lately. Now I know why.” Clark grins. “Just so you know, my mom had a craving for donuts when she was pregnant with my sister. You might want to watch your wallet.”

I watch him leave, unsure whether to laugh or not. Heading over to the couch, I settle on the cushions and close my eyes. God, I’m so tired. The last few days have been horrible, and I was looking forward to having a break from it all. I hadn’t told Megan any of this, but I’d arranged for us to leave for the Bahamas for a short vacation. I know Megan’s mother had said they could go away for a little bit around this time, but Megan had decided to stay and help with the wedding.

She punishes herself too much just so she can control something. She needs a break, and I plan to take her to my holiday home in the Bahamas to relax. Given what’s happened to her, she needs it. And I want the woman I love to smile again.

“Joel?”

I open my eyes and see Megan standing in the doorway. She’s wearing baggy sweatpants and oversized t-shirt that comes down to her knees, her hair frizzy about her face. Even like this, she’s still the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in a long time.

“Hey,” I stand up and go over to her. “I thought you’d still be sleeping.”

“I heard you and Clark talking. Clark’s not known for being quiet.” Megan leans into me as I put my arms around her, her cheek against my chest. “How long did it take for me to fall asleep?”

I hold onto her dearly. “Less than five minutes. You were snoring when I left the room.”

“I told you I don’t snore,” she murmurs.

I smile and kiss her head. “You know you do. It was quite cute, actually.”

Megan makes a noise that sounds like she’s disagreeing with me. She puts her arms around me with a sigh. “Ugh, I feel sick.”
