One of his ears twitched, as if in acknowledgment.

“I met a guy.” I smiled at this. “He looks macho, but he’s really sweet.”

At this, the wolf lowered his head, his eyes half closed, as if he were laughing.

A lot had happened since I left Rich, and meeting a guy who could make me smile was not one of the things I had considered possible. And yet . . .

It was time to address the question in my mind. I looked the wolf in the eye and said slowly, “You’re him, aren’t you?”

Nothing happened at first. We just looked at each other until he stood on all four paws. Then, right before my eyes, the wolf transformed into Luc. “My Luc,” a voice inside my mind said, and I liked the sound of that. He walked across the stream and kneeled in front of me.

For some reason, I wasn’t scared. Warmth seeped into my body where his hands touched mine, and a sense of calm washed over me. “You saved me too,” I whispered.

His face was solemn. “And I always will. We’re mates; destined to be together.”

I stared at him in wonder. “How do you even know that?”

He smiled. “I’m comfortable with you unlike anyone else. Not to mention I’m not complete without you.”

That warm feeling spread into my chest, flooding it with hope and promise. “I feel that too.”

“You know deep down inside that we’re meant to be together, Jill. You’re my mate, and wolves mate for life.”

“For life . . . ?”

He raised a hand and brushed a few strands of hair away from my face. His thumb brushed my cheek, and I leaned into him. “You’re my everything, Jill, and I will spend whatever time it takes to prove it to you.”

He leaned in and kissed me, his lips soft and gentle. I melted into his arms, letting him pull me in close. His touch was tender, like nothing I had ever experienced. I felt safe and cherished.

“I’m glad to see you two are finally together,” announced a voice.

We jumped apart to see Miti smiling at us.

“Grandma!” Luc cried.

“Miti!” I said at the same time.

“It’s good to know I can still sneak up on you, my good boy,” Miti said with a laugh and danced in a circle.

I was the first to recover. “Miti, how are you healed already? You had some really bad injuries.”

She turned to show me how well she was. “It’s one of the benefits of being a wolf, my dear. We heal a lot faster. I’ll also let you in on a little secret.” She came within a foot of us. “I also have an infinite number of lives,” she confessed with a wink, and headed back toward town, dancing all the way.

Luc rolled his eyes. “Don’t pay her any mind,” he said. “No one really understands her, but we all know that she loves us and will take care of us with her life, if needed. Just as she did for you.”

“But I’m—”

“Family. For ever and always. You are one of us now, Jill.”

I sighed at that. It was a contented sigh, and I leaned further into Luc, cherishing this moment and his warmth and protection. He felt like home, and with him by my side, I knew I could face whatever was thrown at me—even a crazed, possessive ex who had kidnapped me.

I knew Rich was still out there, and a part of me still wanted to hide forever so that he couldn’t hurt me anymore, but the feel and smell of Luc next to me reminded me of how far I had come. I was healing, and with Luc by my side, Rich would never control me again.
