Bubbie laughed. “It’s good to see you two eating so wholeheartedly. Have as much as you want; I can always make more.”

“But we’re so full now,” I said, rubbing my stomach. “I think I’ll have to call Luc to carry me home.”

Bubbie laughed all the way back to her kitchen.

I’d been coming once a week to help her with her cooking. She’d been teaching me some of her family recipes. It was so nice to learn more of my culture, something I never got to dive into after Mom passed away.

“You look happy,” Becca said.

“I am.” I sighed. “I really am.”

It had been a month since the escape from that awful cell. After Luc saved me, his dad had immediately brought a team in to clean up the mess at the apartment so the police were none the wiser about the slaughter that had gone on. All the police had been told was that I’d been kidnapped and locked in the cell until they came and saved me.

The real Pac was still at large, apparently no longer working at the hospital. I spent a couple of weeks in fear that he was hiding behind every corner and would jump out at me at any second, but nothing ever happened.

I had moved in with Luc, and I now felt even safer. I was free to go wherever I wanted, but given Pac was still out there, Luc said he couldn’t breathe if he didn’t have someone watching me. One of the pack was always on duty—at a discrete distance, of course. The tracking no longer grated on my nerves; I knew it came from a good place.

“You’re glowing and have that far-away look on your face again,” Becca said, looking over her teacup at me.

I laughed. “I was just thinking about how lucky I am to have you and Luc and his whole family in my life.”

“You deserve it.”

“You do too, Becca,” I said, reaching over and giving her hand a squeeze. “Brandon didn’t leave your side for almost the whole first week after I came back.”

She flushed. “I know. I had to tell him to give me some space.”

“Which it looked like he had a hard time doing,” I pointed out with a smile.

“I know! I eventually had to drive back to the city to have some alone time.”

I watched Becca twirl her spoon in her empty bowl, lost in her thoughts, until Bubbie came back out with a tapioca ball dessert.

After finishing mine, I said, “I think you should try again with Brandon, Becca. Don’t give up on him.” I wanted to tell her that Brandon was acting like she was his mate. If that was the case, there was no way Brandon wasn’t into her.

But I couldn’t say any of that without explaining what I knew about Brandon’s family. Becca would freak out if she knew they were wolf shifters. Besides, that information was Brandon’s to share, not mine. All I could do was encourage my friend to not give up on him. There was bound to be something that would make the man see what a catch he had.

But then Becca said, “I think it’s a lost cause, Jill, but thank you for your support.”

“Oh, Becca—”

Bubbie came in again to get our dishes and saw we were teary-eyed. “Is that how my food makes you react? I thought bringing you dessert would make you girls smile again.”

We laughed.

“No, Bubbie, just boy trouble,” I said.

“Ah. Let’s not have boys be our problem right now then. Come in and help me make some green onion cookies. That will have your boys eating right out of your hands.”

“I’m game for that,” Becca said, getting out of her seat.

I smiled as I followed along behind her. I would make sure Becca had the best chance she could get.
