“Then, it literally only happened last night,” I tell Jillian, aware of how crazy that sounds. “We got the blessing from Artemis.”

“Oh, wow. That’s amazing,” Jillian says. “I’ve never actually heard of that happening.”

“I never heard of it happening before, either,” I admit.

Most of shifter history is so tangled up with mythology that it’s hard to tell which parts are true.

A lot of shifters don’t believe in true mates, and there are even more who don’t believe in our Gods and Goddesses.

I was raised to worship Artemis and Freya when I was young, before my parents died and I was sent to live with my Aunt Maria. It was strange to me that she had no real love for the Goddess of Wolves, but a lot of the shifters from Fallen Pines don’t. It’s not a very religious place.

“Well, that’s awesome,” Jillian says. “I can’t wait for babysitting duties.”

“You’ll be waiting for a while,” I remind her. “We’ll have to make do with mall visits for a while.”

“But not for at least a solid month,” Dante says.

“A month?” Jillian asks him, raising her eyebrows.

“There’s no way in hell Parker’s going to let Amanda out of his sight for at least that long. Probably longer. In fact, I’m pretty sure he’s going to keep her in the apartment, on bed rest for the whole nine months.”

“So, the baby’s his?” Jillian asks. “That’s why he was so …”

“So what?” I ask, feeling Dante shake his head behind me.

“So … fun to be around?” she tries, giving me a fake grin.

“Very funny. What happened that I don’t know about?” I ask.

She shrugs and presses her lips together.

I pull away from Dante’s embrace to turn and face him. “Spill it, or I’ll let Parker have your date night next week.”

He winces. “We might have had a little … talk with Jake while you were sleeping.”

“A little talk?” I can guess what that means. “Parker was threatening him, you mean?”

He shrugs. “He wasn’t not threatening him.”

“He tortured Jake?” I ask, getting to the point.

It’s not something Parker talks about much, but he’s made it plain that if anyone ever tries to hurt me, he’s not going to play nice with them.

Jillian sighs. “He was ready to tear Jake’s skin off if he didn’t tell us where you were.”

“He broke a few of his fingers first,” Dante adds.

“And?” I ask, wondering why they were so reluctant to tell me.

“And you don’t care?” Dante asks.

“He was dealing with a threat to our pack,” I tell him.

“He went a little far,” Dante says. “It got pretty dark.”

I smile at him. “Is torture worse than murder?”

“Uh, no. I just wasn’t sure if you’d want to hear the gory details,” Dante admits.
