“I thought I was being helpful,” he jokes.

“Well, be helpful to someone else.”

He looks at Amanda. “Can I be helpful to you?”

She laughs at his nonsense. “You could get ready for bed.”

I step into my room, and I leave the door open behind me.

It feels a little strange not to close it and lock it, but I know I don’t need to.

I’ve known for a while now. Keeping it locked was just a bad habit.

It took a while to grow out of that, but I’m finally there.

Chapter sixty-three

Amanda

Icouldhavelostmy life today. Not in the literal sense. But if my mates hadn’t been so determined to find me, I could have ended up believing the work of fiction Jake spun for me in the dream realm.

If that had gone on for too long, who knows what might have happened.

It makes me feel queasy just thinking about it.

I came a long way to get here, to find a place where I actually belong. A place I can call home, with mates and friends around me who love me and who care about the things I care about.

My life would have been so different if I’d gotten what I thought I wanted in Fallen Pines.

It would have made me miserable in the long term.

Jake’s so-called love would have trapped me in a place that didn’t want me.

I never would have grown like I did when I left. I never would have learned how to use my magic.

And there’s no way I ever would have wanted to have kids.

“What are you thinking about?” Sean asks, glancing over at me from the windows.

He looks out before he closes the blinds and turns back to me.

I smile at him. “I’m thinking about how many kids we should have.”

That gets his jaw to drop. It also makes his eyes glow.

“You are?” he asks, like he can’t believe it.

“I was thinking a half dozen might be good,” I tell him, not really sure if I’m teasing or being completely honest, but I’m leaning toward a pinch of the former and a whole heaping load of the latter.

The thunder of Dante’s feet makes me glance up at Sean’s bedroom door. He’s standing there with my toothbrush in his mouth, his eyes wide. He mumbles something with his mouth closed.

Sean moves over to him, turning him around. “Finish brushing your teeth, and don’t ask that question again. We’re not putting Amanda through eighteen births. That’s crazy.”

He shakes his head and turns back to me.

“Did Dante seriously just ask if I meant all together or per mate?”

He laughs. “It definitely wasn’t a serious question.”
