“But it could still be a simple command word?”

“It could, but I’m starting to doubt it.”

“What makes you doubt it?”

He frowns at the locked notebook, turning it over in his hands.

“I think there’s more magic involved than there is in a simple unlock spell. It feels a little heavier, a little more complex.” He seems troubled by that realization.

“What did you try next?”

“I tried different magic dissolving spells. They don’t usually work on lock spells, and they didn’t work on this one. Then, I tried spells to break different types of lock spells. There are literally hundreds of those, by the way. Whatever spell is keeping it closed, so far, I haven’t found it.”

“Do you think it’s worth it to keep going?” I ask.

“I don’t know at this point,” he admits. “It could take weeks to find the right spell, and we don’t know that it’ll tell us anything. There’s no guarantee that we’ll find out who this book belongs to when we get it open, and we don’t know what she was doing in the woods.”

He’s right. It could be nothing.

Then again, it’s definitely suspicious that they found the bag along the same route they use every week. Those woods have been known to be used by the shifter population of Wolf Creek for normal reasons, but they’re only typically used by witches who are up to no good.

“It’s earth magic,” I think out loud. “And the charms, are they …”

“Earth magic,” Dante confirms. “Some Dark Arts witches use both before they fully align themselves with the Dark Lord, but honestly, I think this one is a Freya worshipper.”

“What makes you think that?”

“The bag,” he says, shrugging. “It’s woven. Freya worshippers appreciate hand made things. Plus, the closest thing she has to a weapon inside is a pair of nail clippers.”

“So, whoever she is, she’s probably not a threat.”

“Probably,” he says. “It’s weird that she left her bag hanging from that tree though. It looks like maybe she was living out of it.”

“You should keep trying to break open the book,” I tell him. “If she’s not a threat, she could be a missing person.”

And if she went missing in those woods, then there’s definitely a threat lingering outside our town.

Chapter twenty-nine

Dante

AsmuchasIhate to admit it, my Alpha is right. Getting this book to unlock is proving to be a huge pain in the ass, but the girl who left it hanging from that branch was nowhere near us when we were out there, and that could mean she was harmed or kidnapped by someone or something else.

I guess Amanda and I won’t be going on any midnight runs anytime soon.

“I can’t believe you let Parker take your car into the city,” I mutter, as I look at the next spell I need to try.

The Mustang is way sexier than Amanda’s old rust-bucket motor. I’m not surprised the drive got her warmed up for our Beta. I’m also not surprised he’s the one who was with her when she decided to accept the blessing. He’s always been good at talking her through stuff. Whatever she was worried about, clearly, he figured it out and allayed her fears.

“It’s safer than letting him drive Amanda’s car that kind of distance.”

I snort. “Why don’t you just make her a new one?”

“I am,” he says.

“You are?” I ask, not remembering seeing him work on another car that he didn’t sell or give back to its original owner.

“She’s proud of that old car, Dante. I’ve been renewing it bit by bit so eventually the whole thing will be better than it currently is. The frame will probably be the second last part of that plan, then a custom paint job in whatever color she likes.”
