He’s been trying all night, unsuccessfully.

Spell after spell, muttering irritably when they don’t work.

“Would you quit pacing?” he asks. “You’re making me nervous.”

I stop, even though he’s not really asking me to stop pacing.

He’s picking up on the anxious feelings that are filling me with nervous energy that I’m attempting to expel by pacing around endlessly.

I need to calm down. He can’t be calm if I’m not.

I figure out the solution to that problem in a few seconds.

I pull out the chair next to him and hold out my arm as I sit down.

He glances at me, clearly wondering what I’m doing.

“I could use a little calm,” I hint, stretching a little.

Understanding lights in his eyes, and then he gives me an amused look. “You don’t have to be so close.”

“Right,” I murmur, turning away from him, and resting my forearms on the table.

He’s not the most tactile person in the house, which is rare for an Omega.

I’ve watched him use his touch on Amanda when she’s stressed, but he rarely uses it on anyone else.

His hand presses against my naked shoulder, and a second later, his other hand touches my arm.

The soothing calm that he sends through me dismantles my nervous energy swiftly and relaxes my body enough that I might actually be able to go to sleep, despite the fact that our mate isn’t home yet, and I’m not considering going to bed until after she gets home.

“Wow,” I murmur, as he lets go, removing his touch while the effects are still working on me.

“Feel better?” he asks, sounding wry.

I nod slowly, turning to him. “Do you?”

He frowns at me. “Me?”

“I was making you anxious,” I explain, “with all the pacing.”

“Oh. Right. Yeah, it worked. I’m just still frustrated over not being able to unlock this stupid thing now.”

“Could it be Dark Arts?” I ask, knowing he shouldn’t be able to break it if it was.

He shakes his head. “It’s earth magic. It feels simple. I’m overlooking something, but I don’t know what.”

“Go over what you’ve already tried,” I suggest. “Tell me each thing, and we can try to figure it out together.”

He hesitates. I know he’s used to being alone. He’s not the kind of guy who asks for help.

But we’re pack now, and he needs to know he doesn’t have to do everything alone.

“Um, okay. So, the first spell was the common command word to unlock.”

“Right.” I’ve heard of common commands. They’re the typical commands witches use for spells. The words they’re taught to use when they’re learning. “Then, you tried a few variations on the common command?”

He nods. “All the usual words a witch picks when they first change up their commands. It wasn’t any of them.”
