Arethesemyclothes?I sift through my closet feeling vaguely confused. It’s like my aunt went on a shopping spree and forgot to tell me, which doesn’t make any sense because Aunt Maria isn’t the type to spend money on clothes, even for herself.

She doesn’t have a lot, which she’s always reminding me of.

I can’t find anything familiar in the closet.

The green dress is the same shape as the one I love, but it’s newer and prettier.

I’ll wear it to the ceremony.

“Amanda!” my aunt calls out. “You’ll be late to school!”

“I’ll be leaving in a minute,” I yell back, before I hastily pick out an outfit.

I pull on a sleek dark green pencil skirt and a low-cut tank in the same color. I can’t find my usual cardigan. I realize I’m taking too long, so I put on the black wedges that aren’t mine and I pick up my bag to head to school. I expect my aunt to be waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs, but she’s not there like she usually is.

“Bye!” I call out, so she knows I’m gone.

I leave the house, feeling like I might have picked an outfit that’s a bit too sexy to wear during the day. Too late now. It’s not like I brought a change of clothes with me.

Jillian meets me at the gates, her bright eyes going wide when she sees me.

“Holy hell, Amanda! You look amazing.”

Goddess, could she have said that any louder?

I feel my cheeks flushing as I glance past her at her brother. Wherever Jillian is, Jake’s never too far behind. He smiles at me, waves. Then, he turns back to his friends.

“Where did you get that top? It’s so hot,” Jillian gushes, as she takes my arm.

“Um, my closet?” I still don’t know where it came from, really, but at this point I’m not sure it matters. Maybe that spell screwed with my brain and I’m just seeing things a little differently.

Goddess, that’s a scary thought. I guess I could have messed up that second spell. I’m new to magic. I suppose it’s a good thing I didn’t get the chance to use it on Jake, then.

She laughs. “I meant what store. You’re so funny.”

We walk to class and take our usual seats next to each other.

Everything feels kind of weird and hazy. I have trouble focusing on anything, and when school closes early, I suddenly have the strangest sensation that I know exactly what’s going to happen next.

Jillian proves me right by begging me to take her to the beach.

“I don’t think that’s a smart idea,” I tell her.

“What? Why not?” she asks, looking sad.

“Um …” I trail off, knowing I can’t just blurt out that she’s going to be bitten by a gator.

She won’t believe me if I tell her, and I can’t stop her from going.

If I say no, she’ll find someone else to take her. It wouldn’t be the first time.

“I’m not sure I have gas,” I mumble lamely.

“Oh, is that all?” she asks. “I’ll pay for gas. You know you don’t need to worry about that.”

There’s an uneasy feeling in my stomach when I look at her bright smile.

Something bad is about to happen, and I’m not sure I can do anything to stop it.
