When the sandwich has cooled down a little, I take a bigger bite and I’m left vaguely disappointed.

It doesn’t taste like a grilled cheese should. It’s kind of bland. I can’t tell if it’s the type of cheese or the bread, or some combination of both. I have a distinct impression of what it should taste like, and this isn’t it.

Damn. Here I am, trying to be as real as possible, and my sweet mate has done his best for me.

Slipping backward to placate him feels wrong, but I don’t want to complain about something as inconsequential as a sandwich.

“So?” Jake asks as he sits down with his. “How did I do?”

He looks so hopeful. I give him a smile.

“I love it,” I lie.

It’s only a sandwich. It’s not bad. It just isn’t amazing.

I take another bite, and he grins back at me.

We finish eating without much conversation.

Jake has always been kind of quiet. I guess I never noticed how quiet because I was never alone with him. I mean, besides at his birthday party when we talked a little before he kissed me for the first time. It’s taken us a long time to get here, but it feels right.

Finally, I know he wants me as his mate.

I have what I’ve always wanted.

Nothing else matters.

Chapter forty-one

Dante

Magicismything. I should be able to find my mate without breaking a goddamned sweat. The frustration I’m filling up with is combustible and wearying. I pace around the apartment, looking at the maps I’ve created of the entire country on the floor and the walls, even the ceiling.

There’s no trace of Amanda, anywhere.

The light that signifies her energy is still flashing in the same spot.

She was standing in the kitchen when she was teleported to another place.

That’s all I know, and it’s not helpful in the slightest.

Rachel Ellison is studying that flashing light now, trying to work out if there’s something I’m missing.

Amanda’s coven leader is a strong witch with fast reflexes and good instincts, but she’s not seeing anything, either. I don’t need her to say it. I can feel it. She’s confused, and worried, and neither of those things are making me feel any better.

“It feels like she’s close,” Rachel says as she gets to her feet, a frown still creasing her brow.

“It does?” I ask, knowing it must be something she can feel because she’s bonded to Amanda by their shared use of magic. “What does that mean, exactly?”

She shakes her head slowly. “I’m not sure, not yet, but her energy is strong. I don’t think she’s been hurt.”

It should be reassuring, but it’s not. My mate is missing. Until I’ve found her and brought her home safe, nothing is going to make me feel better.

“I tried a world map, but her light stayed where it was, then, too.”

She presses her lips together and puts her gaze back on the floor.

“She’s not in this reality anymore, is she?” I ask, afraid of the answer.
