Rachel checks the back of the book and raises her eyebrows before she closes it again. She puts her hand out to me. “You have the lock.”

I take it out of my pocket and pass it to her.

She slips it into its place and closes the book.

Magic glimmers as it locks back up.

My phone buzzes in my hand.

Jillian’s sent a picture. A kind of unusual picture.

Rachel glances over and double takes. “Did they kill him?”

I read the message and shake my head. “He’s just sleeping.”

His neck is smeared with blood. Parker didn’t waste any time torturing him it would seem.

“Who killed what now?” Shannon asks, looking a little alarmed.

“The guy who took your memories,” Rachel says. “Did he look like this?”

She takes my phone and crops the picture before she shows it to Shannon.

Shannon narrows her eyes. “I mean, he wasn’t sleeping, but yeah, I recognize the nose. Usually, the ex-boxer look is hot, but it didn’t suit him.”

Rachel passes me my phone back.

“Is someone going to tell me what’s going on, or can I have my book back so I can find a way out of this circle of hell at long last?”

“The guy who took your memories also stole my friend and coven sister. This is one of her mates, and her Alpha,” Rachel explains.

“Dang.” Shannon lets out a sigh. “Why are all the hot ones taken?”

She takes her book from Rachel.

All I want right now is to find Amanda, and we know Jake’s behind her disappearance.

Helping another witch who’s been hurt by him feels like it’s beyond my bandwidth, but I can’t leave her out here like this, virtually defenceless.

“Come back with us,” I tell her. “You won’t get far looking like that.”

“We left your bag at the apartment,” Rachel adds. “And I can teleport us back there if you’re ready?”

Shannon blinks. “Seriously? You have my stuff? Oh, thank Freya. I thought I was going to have to start over from nothing.”

Rachel exchanges a glance with me.

That bag contains everything that girl owns?

Fuck, that’s sad. There was hardly anything inside it.

“Ready?” Rachel asks.

The girl closes her eyes. “Ready.”

I nod as I do the same.
