He was only able to say it because he believes it.

“You’re fucking deluded,” Parker snarls. “Where is she sleeping?”

“In Wolf Creek.”

We look at each other.

“Be specific, Jake.Whereis she sleeping in Wolf Creek?” Jillian tries.

I don’t say it, but I know it won’t work. The spell is a little vague, and that means he gets to be vague with his answers. As long as they’re true, in his mind, he can be evasive. There’s nothing we can do about that.

“She’s sleeping in Wolf Creek.”

He laughs again, and this time he doesn’t stop.

“We need to take him to Wolf Creek,” Parker decides.

I nod slowly and look back at Jillian.

She nods at me. She’s ready to go.

Parker clutches the knife tightly.

We’re heading home.

Chapter forty-eight

Sean

Thewitchisgettingcleaned up in the bathroom when Parker and Dante teleport in, appearing in the middle of the room with Jillian and her half-naked brother.

“I’m guessing he was in bed when you found him?” I ask.

“He was sleeping,” Dante tells me.

Parker’s too busy growling at Jake to be listening to me.

Jake sits up slowly, stretching and smiling as if it’s a nice morning.

Parker puts a hand under his arm and hauls him to his feet.

“You’re in the presence of our Alpha. Show some respect,” Parker snarls at him.

Jake gives me a derisory stare. “He’s not my Alpha. He won’t be Amanda’s, either, soon enough.”

“What exactly does he mean by that?” I ask, looking to Dante for the answer.

“All we could get out of him is that she’s in Wolf Creek, which the map would agree with.”

It’s obvious even before I see the knife in Parker’s hand that Jake has been tortured.

I think about everything that Shannon told us, trying to connect the dots.

He wiped her memory for a reason.

It kept her in town where we could find her.

“You wanted us to find Shannon.”
