“He doesn’t see you like we do, Amanda. He’ll never see you as the whole, incredible person that you are. If he could, you would have accepted him when he came to speak to you, and he’d be a part of our pack. He knows that’s never going to happen, so he’s trying to steal you away from us.”

“Why?” she asks, her eyes filling with tears.

I bite back the answer I almost give, knowing it’s not what she’s asking.

She didn’t feel good about herself when she was in Fallen Pines.

It kills me that she might be back to feeling like that.

The bastard doesn’t understand what he’s done.

“If you’re asking why I’m telling you all of this, it’s because it’s the truth. We’re doing everything we can to get you out of here and back home with us. All I ask is that you don’t accept what Jake tells you without question. If you doubt anything, think about why.”

Tears run down her cheeks, and I ache to brush them away.

I can’t. She’s too afraid right now, too wary of me.

“We love you, and we’ll get you out of here,” I promise her. “Be strong.”

I can feel the pull of the waking world before she fades away in front of me.

When I blink, I find myself on the floor of the apartment, right where I passed out.

I push onto my feet, Danny and Jillian moving toward me.

“What happened?” Cheryl asks, looking up from where she’s sitting next to a multi-coloured map.

“I spoke to Amanda. He made her forget everything. She didn’t know who I was.”

“Rachel took Parker and Dante to Amanda’s dorm. It looks like that might be where she’s sleeping.”

“Okay, then that’s where I need to be. Though it’s definitely not where I want him to be.”

I motion to Jake. He’s still passed out on the floor.

“I can keep him from moving,” Cheryl says. “It just means I can’t take you to the dorm.”

“I know which dorm it is. I can walk.”

“You want us to stay here and make sure he doesn’t try to get out of here?” Danny asks.

“That would be great.”

“I could make him invisible, if you’re sick of looking at him?” Shannon suggests. “That’s pretty much all I have the potions for.”

“No thanks,” I tell her, giving a wry smile in passing.

“Bring my bestie back safe and sound,” Jillian calls out as I close the door.

Dante

Finallylayingeyesonmy mate after hours of torture of not knowing where she was is such an incredible relief that I stumble down to my knees at the side of her bed, as if all the energy has left my body. I touch her hand and her fingers curl around mine.

I feel too choked full of emotion to speak.

She’s safe. She’s alive. She’s right here in front of me.
