“I know,” Amanda says. “But I’m a hybrid. It would have hurt him …”

Jillian shakes her head. “It would have hurt hissocial standing. That’s nothing, Amanda. He hurt your feelings, continuously, for years. He knew that.Youhave to know that.”

She does know that. I can feel the pain she’s trying not to show.

“No one’s perfect,” she murmurs, making excuses for him.

“I don’t know about that,” Jillian says. “I am, and you’re pretty damn close.”

That makes Amanda laugh.

“Look, I know my brother. He’s not good enough for you,” Jillian goes on. “He deserves to live a duller than dishwater life in a pack town forever. He’s not special, like you. You’ve always been destined for something better, Amanda. Always.”

My mate seems conflicted now.Thank Fenrir for best friends.

“Tell me what happened that day at the beach,” Amanda says, as if the thought just popped into her head, and now it’s the most important thing in the world.

“You remember the beach?” Jillian asks, groaning. “I know I was an asshole that day, Amanda, and I’m so damn sorry it made those gators come after both of us later.”

Something happens to Amanda when she mentions the gators.

A swell of panic washes over her, and she starts to struggle to breathe.

I move quickly, kneeling in front of her and taking her hands in mine.

She stares, but I know she’s not seeing me.

She’s lost in a thought, a memory.

I give her my calming energy.

“You’re safe,” I murmur. “I’ve got you.”

She sucks in a breath and closes her eyes.

Jillian puts an arm around her. “I’m so sorry, Amanda.”

“It’s not …” Amanda starts, as tears roll down her cheeks. “Did you get bitten?”

Jillian frowns. “You remember that day, but you don’t know that?”

She glances at me. Something’s wrong. We can both feel it.

“I was …” she starts, tears spilling down her cheeks. She shakes her head. “Jake saved me. I don’t know what happened to you, but I remember being worried you would get bitten.”

“I was bitten,” Jillian admits. “I’m a hybrid now, but what do you mean Jake saved you? I was the idiot that day, Amanda. I did the dumb thing that almost got me killed. You saved me. Jake only showed up after, and he didn’t really do anything.”

“I saved you?” Amanda asks, sounding confused. “How could I save you?”

“You used a potion. A knock-out spell. The gator bit me, but he passed out after.”

Amanda frowns. “I think … I don’t remember, exactly, but I knew you’d be bitten. I knew we would go to the beach, too, and then we did.”

“That’s because your real memories are still in there,” Jillian says. “You knew what was going to happen, because it already happened.”

“But it’s not what happened,” Amanda says, reminding us both that something else did, in the dream Jake ‘fixed’ to manipulate her into becoming his mate.

Something that’s making her incredibly upset.
