He got there too fast.

It’s the one thought I keep having.

Everything feels blurry about that memory once I start to question it, everything except what it made me feel. The dread I felt when I saw my friend with those gators is real. The fear I still have from how trapped I felt is real. The overwhelming relief when Jake saved me is real.

That didn’t happen.

Oh, Goddess. It wasn’t real.

He just made it feel like it was.

I move back, wiping at my eyes.

“Why would he do this?” I ask, not understanding.

“The short answer is he’s an asshole,” Jillian says. “The long answer is way more complicated. I’m not sure you’re ready to hear it.”

“You told me coming out here was just the beginning. What did you mean?”

“I think if we’re going to go there, you need to tell me what comes next after you got here.”

“After I got here,” I murmur.

It’s like fumbling around in the dark looking for a light switch. I know it’s on the wall, somewhere but it takes me a minute to put my hand on it.

“I had a flat tire. I … I met Sean.”

The hot Alpha runs a repair shop. I have a flash of memory now that the light’s on. He has a smear of grease on his face as he checks my car.

“You remember how you felt when you met him?” she asks.

“I …” I glance at the Omega, who’s sitting on the floor in front of us now.

He gets up. “I should give you two some privacy.”

“You don’t have to go,” I tell him, not sure why it doesn’t bother me until I get another flash of memory. He’s gazing down at my lips, looking like he wants more than anything to kiss me.

“Are you sure?” he asks, sounding relieved.

“I’m sure,” I tell him, smiling when he sits down on the other bed.

I look back at Jillian. “I was kind of flustered when I met Sean. I was in heat, I think.”

It feels a little weird to talk about that, but every detail helps me remember more.

She nods. “What happened next?”

“Next … Uh, I met Parker at the mall.”

That flash of memory is all about the Beta with those amber eyes that always look a little like they’re glowing.

“Then?” Jillian asks.

“He brought me back to the repair shop because I was looking for work. Turns out, he gave me his job, because he wanted to spend time with me.”

That’s something he revealed later. Much later, once we’d already bonded as mates.

“Things are coming back to me,” I tell her. “More than what we’re talking about.”
