After she left, I looked around as Kennedy flopped into the large sofa.

I sat beside Kennedy, feeling more at home there than I did at my own home or at the penthouse. Kennedy leaned over to rest against my side, and I wrapped an arm around her.

By the time Kokou returned, I was relaxed and was playing a game with Kennedy on her tablet.

“Are you guys ready?” Kokou wanted to know.

“Your house is nice.” Kennedy told her.

“You like it?” She asked. “One day I’ll give you the tour.”

Kennedy nodded and the three of us headed for the door. We turned back toward my place, moving away from Big Timber back into Eagle Rock.

“Cowboy told me you play hockey.” Kokou spoke.

“Cowboy?” I arched a brow.

“Montana—Hank.” She told me. “You know him.”

“Yeah.” I managed without my voice cracking. “I know him. And he’s right—I play hockey.”

“Pro?”

“Yep.”

“A hockey player from Montana.” She scoffed. “Brother, you’re a unicorn. I’m not even sure why that’s a thing.”

“Well, it is.” I told her. “And of course, I’m a unicorn. That’s because I’m fabulous, right?”

She scoffed.

“I enjoy playing very much.” I smiled. “I was good at it.”

“Was?”

“Until lately.” I replied.

“Because you missed that goal?” She asked.

When I said nothing, she smacked my shoulder.

“Whoa!”

“So, you missed one shot.” She told me.

“You don’t understand.” I shrugged. “It’s not justashot. It wastheshot.”

“It happens. You can’t base the rest of your life on that. Get it together!”

I glanced at her to see the seriousness in her eyes. For some reason, I had to laugh softly.

“I agree. But It’ll take some time to get it together, as you say. I’m not even sure why—”

The truck jerked forward.

Kennedy screamed and Kokou immediately shifted to look behind us.

The truck behind us slammed into the back of mine again and Kokou immediately swung into action. She removed her seatbelt, squeezed herself between the seats to cuddle Kennedy in her arms.
