Page 9 of Unleashing Kokou

“Everyone who works for me has been vetted.”

“I’m not taking your word for it.” She told me. “Once everyone has been vetted, we’re going to cut back on the number of people who have access to you and her. The less people I have to go through, the better.”

“Sounds about right.”

“Also.” She continued. “We’re going to go through the surveillance from the school to see if we can get anything off it.”

I turned the stove down under the pasta sauce and focused on her cute face. “I tried getting that. They said I needed a court order.”

“Well, you’re not me.” Kokou told me simply. “Until we figure this out, I’ll be Kenny’s shadow.”

I cleared my throat. “I have a bedroom set up for you.”

“I didn’t bring a bag with me.”

“We can go get that after dinner.” I told her.

Kokou smiled but shook her head. “What time is she supposed to be at school tomorrow?”

“Nine.” I informed her. “She finishes at three then she has a dance class before coming home.”

I invited Kokou to join us for dinner.

Though she declined at first, I managed to talk her into having dinner with myself and my daughter.

Kennedy was already in love as she insisted on her bodyguard sitting beside her to eat.

I watched them together and couldn’t help the smile that drifted across my lips as my daughter kept asking Kokou questions.

I tried stopping Kennedy, but Kokou didn’t mind and answered all of my daughter’s queries.

At the end of dinner, Kennedy decided to help me clear the table and set up the dishwasher before she darted up the stairs to grab her headphones. Kennedy rarely went anywhere without her tablet, loaded with music. Other kids wanted games—she wanted eBooks and music.

I’ve had to put limits on her accounts to keep her from going overboard.

Once Kennedy was ready, we left the house, on our way to Kokou’s place so she could pack a bag.

As we drove, I glanced back to see my daughter had her music in.

“You know, I never thought you weren’t capable.” I told her. “That never once crossed my mind—now that I thought about it, it probably should have, right?”

“Maybe.”

I sighed. “I figured if Hank recommended you, I wouldn’t have anything to worry about.”

“I just wanted to get it off the table.” She responded. “It has always been the first thing on the table when I’m assigned other gigs. I didn’t want to have that cause friction or waste my time.”

“What does Kokou mean?”

She smirked. “I’ll maybe explain to you one day—pull into the driveway.”

Nodding, I did as she suggested and turned off the engine. Though I wasn’t sure if she wanted me to go in with her, I caught my daughter’s attention and we followed Kokou into the house.

Surprisingly, for a soldier, her home was beautiful. There were African art on the walls along with pictures of Hank and the rest of his team.

“You guys can wait here.” She pointed into the living room that was furnished in black.

Rich, dark hardwood floor glistened under my feet and windows adorned with gorgeous black curtains blocked out what was left of the daily light before night fell. Every surface had beautiful figurines, and other knickknacks I figured Kokou picked up in her travels.
