“There is no loyalty amongst most of these people. It’s sad, but true.”

“I see that.” I rubbed the back of my neck, contemplating if I wanted to say what I’d been thinking. “I don’t think I’ll be playing after the end of my contract. I can’t be responsible for team losses if this is the way the fans react. If they were going to bother me, I’m grown. I can take it. But Kenny is my whole reason for being.”

“I understand that.” Angelo nodded. “Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you call me? You always want to suffer alone.”

“This has nothing to do with you. Everything’s been happening so fast, I fell into the rabbit hole before I even realized what was happening.”

He sighed.

“So, Hank sent you one of his protectors.”

“Yeah. Her name is Abeke—I’m pretty sure I butchered that. But they call her Kokou.” I leaned closer. “And she’s badass. This woman walked away from being tossed through the air by a shockwave. I knew she was in pain but she pretended to be fine so Kenny wouldn’t worry. And Kenny thinks she’s the greatest thing ever.”

“Your daughter has always had a knack for picking out good people.”

I smiled.

“Wait—” Angelo laughed. “What is with that look?”

“What look?”

“That—that look!” Angelo pointed at me. “Spill.”

“There’s nothing to spill.”

“Yes, there is.”

I sighed. “There really is nothing. Just that she’s gorgeous.”

“Are we planning on breaking your drought?”

I scoffed. “Break my drought? Did I not tell you this woman knew a million ways to kill a man? And that she has friends where they’d never find the body?”

“You’re being dramatic.” Angelo rolled his eyes. “A beautiful woman is a beautiful woman. They aren’t really complicated. The good ones just want you to be good to them.”

“Yeah—and besides, I’m a single father.”

“Just because you’re a single father, doesn’t mean a good woman won’t want you.” Angelo pointed out. “Some women think the sexiest thing is watching their men be fathers.”

“That’s a load of crap.”

Angelo rolled her eyes.

“And besides.” I sighed, my exhaustion pulsing through me. “I can’t think about that now. I want to make sure Kenny is safe first.”

“Makes sense.”

“Listen, they’re gonna dig through your background.” I informed him. “It’s nothing personal but—”

“If that means Kenny is safe. Dig away.” Angelo shrugged. “Shit, I’d help.”

Nodding, I reached across to hug him. “Thanks, Angelo.”

“Of course.”

I stuck around with Angelo for a while longer, ordering lunch. He changed the subject to something other than hockey and the rest of the team who hadn’t reached out to me sine that ill-fated game. It wasn’t hard to guess they blamed me too.

That was making my decision of not going back easier.
