“Want one?”

I smiled. “Sure.”

He handed me one then turned to open his.

“Can I ask you something?” Daniel asked.

I glanced at him then went back to drinking and staring at the small home. “Sure.”

He didn’t speak again until after he’d taken a drink.

“Why do you cover your hair?” Was the query.

“It’s called the sika’a.” I explained, touching the material that was now covering my hair. “My grandmother started wrapping her hair to protect it. I wear it for that reason as well as for the fashion statement. Usually, the sika’a we wear are colourful and bright.”

“So, because they’re beautiful.”

“Pretty much.”

“Oh—I thought it was like why Muslim women wore the hijab.”

“For some of us, it is.” I offered him a shrug. “You’d have to speak with individual women to see what their thoughts are.”

Silence.

“Why are yours always black?”

“Because in the business I’m in, standing out is the last thing I need.” I replied. “When I’m out and about—like if I was to be on a date, I’d wear a colourful one, or not at all.”

“I see.”

Nothing moved on the street or in the front hard. The one other property in the area had afor salesign out front which mean it had a reason to be dark and silent.

“Um—one more question.”

I laughed. “Sure.”

“How’s your hip?” Daniel asked.

“It was okay.” I told him. “I rubbed it again after my shower. I’m probably agitating it right now with the long sitting. But I’ll worry about it later. If anything, I’ll—”

“Did you see that?” Daniel asked, easing forward.

“See what?”

“There was a light—there!”

“There’s someone in there!” I arched a brow. “How did they get in there? They must have snuck in through the back somehow.”

“Are we going in?”

“I was going to say I’m going in.” I admitted. “And that you should stay here. But you wouldn’t listen, would you?”

“Not a chance.”

Daniel was already letting himself out of the car.

Sighing, I followed, unsnapping the safety strap on my holster as we snuck across the street and entered the front yard.
