Page 42 of Unleashing Kokou

Kokou laughed, a soft melodic sound. “I’ll give you a kiss if you promise never to do that again.”

I did the Elvis hip wiggle.

She only laughed harder even as she leaned across the island and kissed me tenderly.

Hearing her laugh melted my heart.

I moaned.

“One more.” I begged, unashamedly.

After she left, I peeked out the front window to see if I could see who was watching over me. But I saw no one.

The thought of someone always there, in the shadows, watching, unnerved me even though I know most of them were the good guys. But I also knew that most often than not, there were people there, lurking in the peripheral of the darkness, waiting to do me harm.

Living in paranoia was never healthy. It led to mistrust and mistakes that could reverberate through my lifetime and haunted my daughter.

I never wanted her to suffer because of my sins.

Pulling myself together, I went into my office with a drink and called Angelo. I wanted him to know of my decision before I told anyone else.

“Hey, you!” Angelo greeted me, his face covered in sweat.

“Did I catch you at a bad time?” I quirked a brow.

“Trying to get a workout in.” Angelo replied, dragging a towel over his face. “Jogged up a few steps today and realized—wow, I’m out of shape.”

I laughed softly.

“What’s up?”

“I’ve decided to all it quits.”

“I figured.” Angelo sighed.

“You’re not disappointed?”

“Disappointed?” He wrung the cap from a bottle of water, tossed back half of it then leveled his eyes on me through the camera. “Any idiot could see that after this last season hockey didn’t make you happy anymore. And now with some idiot out there trying to ruin your one happiness—you walking away isn’t surprising. I just hope you’ll find something that makes you happy again.”

Nodding I exhaled. “I wanted to tell you first before I told anyone else.”

“You don’t owe me that, Daniel.”

“You’re my captain.” I pointed out. “You’re my best friend. It’s only fair.”

“Fair.” Angelo smiled.

“I think it’s time I find something else to do so I can spend more time with my daughter.” I continued. “I mean, she’s six now. If I don’t prioritize time with her, pretty soon I’m going to blink and she’s eighteen and I won’t know where that time went.”

“Then she shows up on Maury under a title sayingMy Father Didn’t Love Me.”

“Heaven forbid!” I cried.

Angelo laughed. “But seriously, I’m happy for you, man. I still have a couple more seasons in me.”

“And I’ll back you on that.” I scratched the back of my neck. “Listen, you wanna come over this weekend for dinner? There’s someone I want you to meet.”

“Is this your gorgeous bodyguard?”
