“Yeah.”

“Am I to guess by that lovely love bite on your neck that things have moved further since we’ve last spoken?”

“You’d guess correctly. But right now, it’s kind of a hazy time for us.” I admitted. “I’m open to good things with her. I’m walking in with an open mind.”

“Atta boy.” Angelo cheered. “Well, I’ll see you this weekend—I know you have a few more calls to make.”

He was right—and I wasn’t looking forward to any of them.

CHAPTER9

Abeke “Kokou” Bolande

I saton the trunk of the car and waited for Nova to walk Kennedy out of the building and over to me. The moment Kennedy saw me, her face lit up and she released Nova’s hand and darted over to me. Hopping down, I caught her and scooped her into my arms.

“Hey, my pretty.” I greeted her. “How was your day?”

“Jimmy Sampson pulled my hair.” She reported. “So, I punched him in the arm and made him cry.”

I smirked.

“She likes you.” Nova laughed.

I kissed Kennedy’s cheek and she laughed while tangling her arms around my neck.

I placed her in the backseat and closed the door then turned to look at Nova. “Thank you for doing this.”

“Are you kidding me?” Nova asked. “These kids are amazing. And Tristan loves spending time with Sadie and Montana. It gives me a little bit of a break from mommy duties.”

“But you’re still spending the day with kids.” I arched a brow.

“Yes.” Nova grinned. “But other people’s kids that are sent home at the end of the day—not my home.”

“Oh, gawd.” I groaned.

“Listen.” Nova stepped down from the sidewalk to lean her back against my car as she stood beside me. “There have been some mumblings around the school about the new teacher, Anna Lowe.”

“What kind of mumbling?”

“That she may not be who she says she is.” Nova reported. “Apparently, people are saying she has no idea what she’s doing in the classroom. When I did a little digging, they’re saying they don’t even think she is a teacher.”

“If she wasn’t a real teacher, Swede would have found it, right?”

“Not necessarily.” Nova glanced back at Kennedy in the car. “He was looking for credentials and found some. Maybe if he dug deeper, he’ll find something else. I’m just saying it’s worth looking into.”

I nodded and reached in to hug her. “Let me take this little one home. Is Reaper picking you up?”

Someone honked and we looked up to see Kujo waving at us.

“It’s such a drag being around all these handsome men, don’t you think?” Nova giggled, waving back.

I offered him a mock salute.

“Yeah.” I chuckled then sighed contently. “Totally unacceptable.”

Nova kissed my cheek, blew Kennedy a kiss and jogged across the street to Kujo’s truck. I climbed behind the wheel of mine but waited until Kujo pulled off before I started the ignition.

Nova’s words floated around in my head, but I didn’t dare make a call to Kujo until Kennedy was safe at home. The less she knew about what was happening, the better.
