It couldn’t have been a coincidence that Sherine went missing and Anna just happened to pop up and fit right in.

And the question—again—was why hire someone with no experience to cover such a highly sought-after teacher?

No matter how much time had passed, it still made no sense at all.

Anna could be a plant—someone set in place to watch over Kennedy until there was a way to grab her. If that was the case, we had to be a lot more careful and tighten the wall around her a little more.

“Kenny, what do you say we stopped and pick up some ice-cream to surprise your father?” I asked her.

Kennedy readily agreed and I stopped as promised.

By the time we arrived home again, I was exhausted. But there was plenty I had to do before I could even consider sleep. I left Kennedy for some private time with her father and put in a video call to Swede who was in the middle of eating.

Still, he took some time to talk to me.

“Nova’s right.” Swede replied. “I should have gone deeper, but it didn’t even occur to me she could have been a fake. Brain fart, it won’t happen again.”

“Now, stop that.” I assured him. “None of us are perfect. These things happen.”

Swede smiled. “You’re sweet for saying that. But we both know in my line of work these mistakes can cause a mission to go terribly wrong.”

“But it didn’t. We have Kenny and she’s safe.”

“Just so you know, I haven’t found anything on the others.” He reported. “But the guy you and Daniel caught is pinging all over the place. We handed him over to the police and they didn’t ask any questions. He’s wanted for murder for hire for at least three unsolved cases.”

“So, once again we did their jobs for them.”

“It seems so.” Swede scribbled something down and lifted his beautiful eyes to the camera. “Do you need a break from assignment to breathe?”

Footsteps sounded down the stairs and I stared at the door until Daniel popped his head into the kitchen. “Not yet.”

My body remembered the wonderful things he’d done to it mere hours before.

I trembled.

“For now, I’m good.” I blushed and looked away from Daniel. “Go hunting. Catch me something.”

“Your wish is my command.” Swede dropped his voice to a low octave.

I giggled.

Off the phone with Swede, I explained the newest developments to Daniel. The worry in his eyes bothered me, but I knew as a good father, he would be.

“Maybe I should homeschool her for the rest of the school year.” I explained. “There isn’t much time left.”

“Or, I know this isn’t an ideal suggestion, but virtual schooling.”

He nodded. “You’re right—not ideal.”

“But let’s be honest, you’re no teacher.”

Daniel sighed.

I turned and pulled him into my chest and rubbed his back. For being a big, tough hockey player, he wasn’t afraid of letting me see when he was hurting.

That wasn’t what I’d expected.

I thought for sure he’d try to hide his pain, pretend to be happy, tougher.
