“It means, teacher.” The gruff voice snapped. “They’re classified.”

“Wow.” The young voice scoffed. “But wait—there’s more! She has a Medal of Honour.”

“So?” The first man asked.

“Don’t you know anything?” The second man snarled. “The only woman who’s ever been awarded one of those, was Dr. Mary Edwards Walker.”

“Who cares?” Anna asked.

“In thefuckingCivil War!” The second man screeched. “Do you know how bad-ass you have to be to earn one of those? No other woman has one. Let’s face it. When we took this job, we thought it was only to grab the kid, hand her over, collect the money and go. Do you want to die?”

Silence.

“He has a point.” Anna finally spoke. “How much is your life worth?”

“You’re going to run because of some pussy?” Joshua demanded. “According to this, she’s been out of the military for a while now. People grow out of shape, forget things.”

“You might want to turn the page.” Anna told Joshua. “Where it says she was a part of Montana SWAT.”

“And they don’t forget shit.” The young voice was sad. “It’s like fucking muscle memory to them. Fifty years later they still know how to rip your head from your body with their bare hands and shove it up your ass.”

“Shit.” Joshua muttered. “We didn’t sign up for this.”

“He’s right.” Anna agreed.

“What do we do?” The young man asked.

“We take the deposit they paid us, and we walk away.” Anna told the man. “Forget the job. Cut our losses.”

“That’s not going to happen.” Joshua told them. “Do you seriously think she’s going to allow that? She was Army. They get a mission, they complete it. Nothing gets in their way. Nothing stops them but death.”

“Then we get her before she gets us.” Anna pipped up. “Simple.”

“And what do we do about the guys that take her place?” Joshua demanded. “These people are like the fucking Hydra.”

“What does that even mean?” The second man wanted to know.

“You chop off one head.” Joshua explained. “And two grows back. You get rid of her—and a bunch of her boys who had her back will be coming. There’s no running from this.”

“Do you know what a Kokou is?” The second man’s voice trembled.

“Is that really important?” Anna’s voice was tired. “Huh? Right now?”

“These military people earn their nicknames.” Joshua told her before the other man could speak up. “Sometimes it’s because of something funny. Other times, it’s through bloody hell.”

“And she earned hers, with blood.” The second voice pointed out. “Otherpeople’s blood.”

“What?” Anna asked.

“Kokou is the most feared of the Yoruba undergods.” The man replied. “You fail to respect Kokou, it never ends well—usually, for you.”

“That’s a myth.” Anna told him. “Can we please focus on what’s real?”

“Oh yeah—you want to test that theory?” The man pushed. “We need to at least try to get away from this. If we don’t, if we fight back, we’re all fucked.”

“We could go to the cops.” Joshua suggested. “Give ourselves up.”

“Do you really think the cops can save us?” Anna asked. “Correction, do you think they will want to save us? Kidnapping is a felony.”
