Page 52 of Unleashing Kokou

“Technically, we didn’t kidnap anyone.” The second man pointed out.

“You’re an idiot.” Joshua’s voice was hard, yet shaking.

“We did the wrong thing.” Anna sounded scared. “We pissed off the devil. Now, she’s coming.”

“Anna is right.” Joshua sounded resolute. “According to this file, there isn’t a hole dark enough where she won’t find us.”

“You’re saying it’s only a matter of time.” The second man’s voice was soft. “That we just accept this and sit here waiting for her to swoop in like some grim reaper with its and lop our heads off?”

“Yeah.” Joshua replied. “Pretty much.”

I glanced over at Kokou.

She was no longer watching the screen but peering up and over at the house. It seemed she was one dangerous woman and they’d gotten a hold of her record.

“They’re afraid of you.” I spoke softly. “Are they right to be?”

“Yes.”

“No explanation?”

“What do you want me to say?” Kokou turned to look at me.

“Well, we could start off with that you’re not as bad as they say you are.” I pushed. “That you’re not the big bad wolf.”

“Okay, I’m not the big bad wolf.” She replied, then turned her head back to face the ranch. “I’m worse.”

The coldness in her voice sent something down my spine—I wouldn’t exactly call it a shiver. A shiver was cold, icy—this was warm and left my heart racing in a way I’d never experienced before.

“What they said, about you not stopping.”

Kokou said nothing.

“Abeke!”

“What?” She growled.

“Are they right? That you don’t stop?”

“Yes.”

“Again with the one word replies.” I snapped.

“Do you really want to argue my work ethics?” She asked. “Hmm? Right this moment? Is that what you really want to do?”

I sighed.

The truth was, I didn’t know the answer to that.

“Look.” She sighed. “You hired me to do a job. I’m doing it. If you get cold feet and want to back out now, speak up. But I won’t stop until there isn’t a threat to Kenny’s life. Because just like how I won’t give up, someone sent these people after your child for a reason. And they won’t stop until they get what they want.”

“Shit.”

“You have a decision to make.” Kokou told me. “I can do this with your support, or without. What’s it going to be?”

I looked down at the screen then up at Kokou. This was a side of her I never expected, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about any of it.

“Well?” Kokou demanded.
