“I don’t have to!” He shook his head. “Police.”

Untying him, I dragged him back to the house and dropped him to his knees in the front yard. I supposed Daniel was looking out for me because the moment Mario slumped down, he opened the front door and stepped out—barefooted.

“What’s this?” Daniel asked. “Where’s your top?”

“He was wandering around the property.” I replied. “I gave him a choice between being shot or being arrested.”

“He’s bleeding. Why?”

I sighed impatiently. “Do you really want to know?”

“We’re going to have to have a talk about your temper.” Daniel rolled his eyes. “I’ll call the cops.”

Without speaking, I broke down the back of my truck and hopped up with my legs hanging off to watch my captive. After taking a few pictures of his face, I sent them to Swede with instructions to find out all he could on him, then shoved the phone back into my pocket.

By then Daniel returned and sat beside me, without speaking.

“I’m not sure what you’re doing to me.” I told him, keeping my voice soft. “But I wouldn’t have given him the choice before I met you. I know how these people work. You give them enough rope to hang themselves and they take you down with them.”

“I’m sorry—I guess.”

I turned my head to look at him, said nothing, then returned my eyes to Mario.

“You sitting here topless…”

Smirking, I bounced him with my shoulder. “Mind out of the gutter, Hockey Boy.”

He laughed and kissed my shoulder.

It took some time before we saw flashing lights in the distance. I remained with Daniel then melted into the darkness when the lone police officer arrived to escort Mario to the station. I watched as Daniel spoke to the police officer.

When Daniel was alone in the front yard again, I stepped forward and he almost jumped out of his skin.

“I don’t know why that reaction.” I walked by him and headed up the front steps. “You knew I was here.”

CHAPTER12

Daniel Archer

While the othersaround the room hashed out possible plans, I kept my eyes on Kokou. She sat on the back of the sofa with her legs on the seating. She leaned forward, rested her elbows on her thighs and laced her fingers.

It was as if she wasn’t paying attention, but I knew better.

There was something different about how she was with me since the conversation we’d had in the car. It was almost as if she’d withdrawn into herself.

“No one left or went in.” Bear reported. “It was eerily quiet the entire time.”

“Let’s hope it stays that way.” Hank replied.

“According to Kujo, Anna left this morning.” Swede spoke up. “I’ve been keeping track of her phone calls and found she’s been making plenty of calls to this one number in Columbus, Montana.”

“Do you know who lives there?” Daniel asked. “I don’t know anyone from there.”

“According to this—the owner’s name is Jack Marley. He’s a filthy rich businessman.” Swede replied. “His wife Cassandra is a stay-at-home wife.”

“No kids?” Bear asked.

“Nope.” Swede told us.
