When I laughed, I agitated my wound and moaned.

While Daniel was out of the room, I took that chance to push myself out of the bed. For a while, I had to hold onto the bed to get my legs used to my weight, then leaned on different pieces of furniture to make my way into the toilet. It took some doing to use the facilities and washed my hands.

I felt dirty—sure, the hospital had been cleaning me up, but it was nothing compared to an actual shower. I pulled the gown back and looked at the bandaged wound on my chest, knowing it was going to leave one more scar I didn’t need.

My headwrap had been removed. Someone had put it back on, but it was just put back on as a head tie.

“I look horrible.” I sighed, wetting my palms with cold water and patting my cheeks.

Taking some time to remove the headwrap, I hung it over my shoulder then flash my face with cold water before using a piece of paper towel to pat the skin dry. I sniffed the material and frowned.

Still, I wrapped my head properly, pinched my cheeks to get a little life back in them, then took a deep breath.

When I exited, Daniel was setting a vase with sunflowers on the only spot left on the table.

It did my heart well seeing the pile of flowers. I knew they were from the protectors and their wives—no one else in my life cared.

Actually, I had very few people in my life.

“This one came from Sherry—Kenny said it’s her best friend’s mother.” Daniel turned to look at me.

“Did you take off my headwrap?” I asked.

“No.” He cleared his throat. “The doctors removed it during your surgery. I wasn’t sure if you wanted anyone to—I wasn’t sure you wanted me to see you like that. I’m sorry I didn’t know how to wrap it properly.”

Releasing the death grip I had on the back of the extra chair, I wavered on my feet until I collapsed against his chest. I snaked my arms around him and shifted in as close as I could.

“I don’t mind you seeing my hair.” I told him. “I would have rather it have been in your bedroom.”

My cheeks burst into flames.

“Thank you for doing that.” I told him around a kiss. “I’ll teach you how to tie it for me.”

“Damn.” Daniel’s voice cracked. “Why do I get the feeling that’s sexy as hell.”

Before I could answer, my knees buckled. Daniel scooped me into his arms and carried me back to the bed.

“I hate being like this.” I admitted.

“Depending on someone else?” He asked. “You help others all the time. Now, we’d like to be here for you.”

I sighed. “Any news on Anna?”

“You got her in the arm.” Daniel told me. “They brought her here and she tried breaking into your room. I almost shot her—Percy talked me down.”

“Wait—Percy?” I arched a brow. “Percy Bloom?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“Um—” She licked her lips.

“Let me guess.” Daniel shifted away from the edge of my bed. “He’s your ex.”

I laughed. “No. Percy isn’t my type.”

His shoulders fell.

“Percy and I met when I was about fifteen.” I explained. “His parents moved to town, and he started our high school. He was a good kid.”
