Nova showed up and took Kenny away under the guise of picking us up some food. During that time, the doctor came in to check on me and after he left, I noticed just how quiet Daniel had been.
“Daniel?”
“Hmm.”
“Can you help me with some water?” I asked.
He didn’t question it. Once I’d drank some water, Daniel helped me to sit up with some pillows behind my back. When he turned to go back to the window, I caught his arm.
“What’s the matter?” I wanted to know.
“I almost got you killed.” Daniel admitted.
I muttered a few profanities in Yorùbá then sighed.
“Daniel, stop that.” I scolded him. “You didn’t get me shot. And since you haven’t noticed, I’m still standing—so to speak.”
“This is—”
“Nova took Kennedy away so we can have a few minutes alone.” She sighed. “Do you really think she did that so we can argue about who is at fault? I’m pretty sure she thought you’d want to kiss me—to hold me.”
Daniel tilted his head to the side. “You’re not mad?”
“Mad? No.” I shifted against the pillow. “I’m tired. Not mad.”
I watched the wheels crank inside his head before he gave in and sat on the side of the bed. Daniel leaned forward and kissed me—tenderly at first before deepening the kiss. Using my free hand, I dug my fingers into his hair and held his head in place so I could kiss him until he took my breath away.
Before I knew it, I was carried away until someone cleared their throat from the door.
Sighing my irritation, I released Daniel and he turned as I leaned to the side so we could both see who it was.
Nova was standing there, a bag in one hand, the other hand covering Kennedy’s eyes.
“Are they kissing?” Kennedy asked. “I think they’re kissing.”
Kokou laughed and I groaned.
We ate burgers and fries while talking about things that wouldn’t scare Kennedy. We laughed, made jokes and enjoyed the time until Reaper arrived to pick up his wife and Kennedy.
“Already?” Kennedy groaned. “I was having fun.”
“I know, my love.” Daniel told her. “I’ll pick you up tomorrow. Until then, you get to hang out with aunty Nova and Tristan.”
“The baby!” Kennedy cheered.
“She loves babies.” Daniel chuckled. “You can take her back to my place and pick up whatever she needs. I’ll pick her up tomorrow night.”
“No rush.” Reaper told us. “We love having Kenny.”
Kennedy climbed onto the bed to hug me, then Daniel lifted her down and led her out the door.
“Rest up.” Nova leaned in to kiss my cheek.
“No freaky stuff.” Reaper winked at me.
I laughed. “There’s nothing wrong with my lady bits. If anything, I’ll just let him do all the work.”
Reaper facepalmed and Nova laughed out loud.
