“You know she loves dancing, her best friend is Abigail and every chance she gets, Kennedy is in the pool. You know about her.”

“But she needs her mother. And I’m not it.”

“No. She doesn’t need her mother.” Daniel replied. “Her mother is toxic and will hurt her if given the chance. Look at me.”

But I couldn’t.

If I gave in and met his gaze, the tears would fall.

Daniel moved to kneel in front of me. “The mother my child needs is the woman who took on this mission without question. The woman who jumped through a glass window and took off after a dangerous crook. The mother my Kenny deserves hates dancing but did it anyway just because Kennedy asked. Don’t you think that person is good mom material?”

I hung my head.

“Abeke, I’m not saying you have to make the decision now.” He told me. “And I’m not saying you have to agree to it. I’m aware that not every woman is cut out to be a mother. But in the short time you’ve known Kenny, you’ve shown her more love than Cassandra could ever show her. You’ve literally protected her with your life. So, even if you don’t want this old, washed-up hockey player, please tell me you’ll at least consider keeping Kenny in your life.”

The tears flowed down my cheeks then and I tossed myself into Daniel’s arms wrapping my arms around him. For the first time in a very long time, I cried.

“Come on, Goddess.” His voice cracked as he rubbed my back. “Don’t cry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“I’m not hurt.” I hug him tighter. “I’m happy. And you’re not old—washed-up maybe. But not old.”

Daniel laughed softly, then rose, picking me up and carrying me from the room. When he finally set me down, it was on his bed.

“We could make this work, Abeke.” He whispered, kissing my nose. “You being a bodyguard, me being your trophy lover.”

I laughed out loud. “I like the sound of that.”

Daniel nodded and I kissed him.

“How about I make us a snack and we can watch a movie?

“Sure, but can we take a shower first?” I asked him. “If we shower together, you can help me keep the wound dry and—”

He arched a brow when I stopped speaking.

“And?” He asked.

I giggled. “You get to see my boobs.”

“Score!”

CHAPTER15

Daniel Archer

We waiteduntil Kokou was somewhat healed before we tackled the problem of Cassandra. Thanks to Percy running damage control, we were able to keep Anna’s arrest and the death of the other two out of the media.

Swede was pretending to be Anna whenever Cassandra reached out and as far as we knew, Cassandra was none-the-wiser.

While Kennedy spent time with Angelo, I climbed behind the wheel of my truck with Kokou and we set out for a private air strip not far from the house. Since the drive from Eagle Rocks to Columbus would be a little over three hours, Montana’s friend Hermes sent us his private jet.

When I parked, I held her hand, leading her from the truck across the large hanger to the pristine, white plane waiting for us. The pilot and hostess met us at the door, greeted us with bright smiles then the hostess escorted us to where the seats were.

She explained to us how things were going to work and soon after she left us alone, we buckled in. When the plain was airborne, I took a good look at her.

God, she’s beautiful.

But her eyes were worried. I’d never seen her sit that way before—with her hands clasped in her lap while staring out the window with her jaw clenched.
