Page 77 of Unleashing Kokou

“Want a chocolate bar?” I asked.

She laughed softly. “No.”

“Nervous about flying?” I asked. “Because if you are, I’d be honoured to join the mile high club with you.”

Kokou giggled and reached over to hit my thigh. “I’m just trying not to think about what’s coming.”

“Are you worried I’ll take one look at her and fall instantly in love?”

“Honestly.” Her voice was soft. “It had crossed my mind. But you all but said I was your woman. After you insinuated that, I stopped thinking you’d fall for her again.”

I bowed my head—astounded by how happy her words made me. “That’s because you are—my woman, that is.”

Kokou smiled. “And you’re a man of your word, right, Daniel?”

I nodded.

“Then I have nothing to worry about there.” She shrugged. “I worry that she might start a fight for Kenny.”

“I’m not going there with her again.” I spoke up. “When the first battle happened, Kenny was a baby. It didn’t really hurt her. Now that she’s almost seven, I’m not putting my daughter through any of that. I don’t care what I have to do.”

“Okay.”

For the rest of the flight, I had her in my lap and cuddled into my chest. I wanted to make love to her then, to stroke her skin and listen to her whisper my name. Desperately, I wanted to feel the bite of her nails down my back, the warmth of her body wrapped tightly around me—I craved Abeke like I craved no other women.

Still, I gave her the comfort I thought she needed by holding onto her, cradling her head against my chest and sighing with her hot breath playing against my neck.

Though I tried easing her mind about what was to come, I wasn’t sure I did a good job at it. This was the only way I knew of to further help her feel better.

After we landed, she didn’t let me go.

The hostess must have gauged something was wrong, for after she announced we could deplane, she left us in the silence of the now sitting aircraft.

Eventually, Kokou kissed my cheek tenderly, stood and straightened her clothes. When she extended a hand to me, I looked up into her eyes, trying to find a worry or any hesitation. I didn’t find any, so I took her hand and allowed her to pull me to my feet.

We stopped long enough to speak with the pilot about going back. Apparently, we had the plane the entire week and Hermes had paid for their stay in Columbus for a few days. We just had to be on our way back by the end of the week as Hermes required the plane the next start of the next week.

Leaving them, we descended the steps and the hostess led us to a black SUV I’d called ahead to rent.

Alone, we sped along a backroad until we eventually hit a main road. We stopped long enough to pick up some snacks and cold bottles of water, then continued.

Columbus wasn’t familiar to me. From where I lived to there was a million miles apart from each other.

“Here’s what I found out.” Swede’s voice filled the vehicle via the handsfree. “Cassandra usually brings her husband lunch around one. She does it everyday like clockwork.”

I scoffed. “Who knew she had it in her to be the perfect Stepford wife?”

“Were you going to marry her?” Kokou asked.

“I’m not sure.”

“Guys.” Swede called in his dad voice. “Focus for me.”

“Right.” I cleared my throat. “Sorry.”

“So, if we’ve planned this right, we can get both of them at his office.” Kokou spoke up.

“Precisely.” Swede replied. “And according to the GPS on her Lincoln, she is on her way there now—fifteen minutes out.”
