“How far are we?” I asked.

“Five.” Swede replied. “Black Lincoln Navigator, latest model.”

“Got it.”

“Happy huntin’!” Swede called.

With him gone, I glanced over at Kokou to see that she was adjusting the headwrap. For the first time since I met her, she was wearing one that wasn’t black. This one was orange with a beautiful African print in brown.

She wore a pair of well fitted blue jeans with a white tank and thin orange, sleeveless trench.

“You look beautiful.” I told her when she pulled down the mirror to check herself out.

Even though I told her I wasn’t interested in Cassandra, I knew a part of her wanted to out-look my ex. It was probably not even a conscious want on her part.

“You’re only saying that.”

I laughed. “I’ll prove it later.”

“Daniel Archer, you focus on the road.”

But she was smiling as she lifted the visor again and flopped back in the seat.

As we pulled into the parking lot, her mood changed. It was almost as if she was looking for trouble, the way her eyes darted around.

It was the soldier in her, the training.

Reaching over, I held her hand and after a squeeze, she lifted the back of mine to place a kiss there. No words passed between us as we waited

“That’s her.” I frowned.

Kokou shifted in her seat and glanced over her right shoulder. We watched as Cassandra parked in a specific spot, climbed out and moved to grab a package from the back seat. She was dressed in a kind of yellow sixties pinup girl dress that landed in a flair at her knees, white heels with her dark hair pinned up in a high ponytail.

When we were together, her hair was always bleached blond.

I suppose this was her natural colour.

She’d gained some weight, but it wasn’t in a bad way. Her body curved like the kind of woman who could be my type. But Cassandra had the blackest kind of soul and had hurt me in the worse possible way—all I could feel right then was angry contempt.

“Calm down,Ferin.” Kokou cautioned while squeezing my hand. “You can’t go into this pissed.”

“I’m trying.” I tore my eyes from my ex and met Kokou’s gaze. “What does that mean?”

She licked her lips and looked away from me the way she did when she blushed. I made a mental note to pick up the topic later.

“This conversation is not over.” I assured her.

Cassandra sauntered by us and climbed the flowing stairs of the building. After she entered, Kokou and I scrambled from the front seat and made our way up the stairs and into the glistening lobby.

“So, this is how the other half lives.” Kokou muttered.

We slowed down while Cassandra pressed the elevator’s call button. We stopped so I could turn my back to her and Kokou stepped forward and wrapped her arms around me, no doubt watchingto see what floor the elevator went to.

I took the moment to kiss the side of her head, hugged her back and melted into her chest. After about forty seconds, she lifted her head to kiss my chin then stepped away from me.

“She’s on the fortieth floor.” Kokou explained, taking my hand and leading me to the elevator.

When we finally stepped in and the doors closed, I drew her into my arms. Tipping her chin up, I kissed her—feeling her warm tongue flowing over mine soothed me in a way I hadn’t experienced with Cassandra.
