Curling my fists, I slammed them repeatedly into my attacker’s ribs until he grunted and staggered back.

I used that falter in him to round-house kick him to the face.

He toppled over a group of desks and while he groaned and tried standing up, I reached for Eli who offered me a hand while taking Dillon’s hand with his free one.

“Come on!” I shouted. “We gatta go!”

“That was so cool!” Eli exclaimed as they tumbled after me.

By this time, an alarm was blaring throughout the school, but I didn’t stop to figure it out. I led the boys down a set of stairs in the back but when we tried getting out, the door was locked.

“Son of a—” Standing back, I kicked at the door.

It didn’t budge.

Frowning, I rammed it with my shoulder and though I think I either dislocated something or broke it, the door gave way.

We rushed to the car and once they were both in, I sped away from the campus.

We weren’t being followed.

But one thing was for sure—someone was out to get Carter Finch.

And they didn’t care how they got him.

CARTER

“Hello, Seema Lipson.”

I rubbed my tired eyes.

“Sorry.” I told Seema. “He does that—just kind of pop in.”

She grunted, waved at Tex and curled her legs under her. I didn’t miss the wince when she moved. It was probably from her fight to get Eli and Dillon out of that school.

According to my son, she’d taken on two men twice her size. He could have been exaggerating but I didn’t think so. Henchmen were usually large and for her to take on two of them—I exhaled loudly.

“There isn’t anything on the footage.” Tex explained. “They probably made sure they found the one part of that damn stretch of road that wasn’t monitored.”

“So, we have nothing?” Seem asked.

“I didn’t say that.” Tex smirked. “I got something from the attack at the school. One of the men popped as ex-Green Beret.”

“An American?” Seema asked. “Why would they be over here?”

“Um—you haven’t told her?” Tex asked.

“Told me what?” Seema demanded.

Tex sighed. “He can explain that later. Right now—the man wearing the blue baseball at—”

He paused as video footage popped onto Carter’s laptop.

“That oaf is ex-green beret. He walked out about five years ago and vanished.” Tex carried on. “You see, he was under investigation for corruption and sexual harassment. His name is Sevlin Jessop. The next time he popped up again was working with a mercenary team out of New Orleans called The Tide, and when I say they sell their services to the highest bidder—I mean it.”

“The kind of team that doesn’t care who gets hurt, as long as they’re paid.” Seema spat. “They were always a big danger to us when we deploy. Because they show up with no regard for our lives and just fuck with everything. Who is he working for now?”
