“Then, what?”

“I don’t feel right you looking like that for another man.”

“Don’t be stupid. I’m not dressing like this for another man.” She snapped. “This is work. And Wolf has a wife who he’s deeply in love with.”

“You can’t understand how I’m feeling?”

“Carter, look at me.”

She didn’t speak again until I was looking down into her eyes.

“There is no reason for you to be jealous.” She assured me. “Because even if there are a million other men in that room looking at me—my eyes will be on you. Understand?”

Though I nodded, I still felt uneasy.

Eventually, I walked her out to her motorcycle and helped her with putting on her helmet. Though I felt unsteady, I glanced over my shoulder to ensure we were okay before kissing her softly.

“You watch your back, okay?” My voice cracked. “I want you safe.”

“I’ll be okay.” She promised. “Wait up for me?”

“Always.”

She rode off and my heart shattered.

The air was cooler than it probably should be. Maybe it was because of the air floating toward us from the lake. But whatever the reason, I wasn’t about to question it.

The breeze floated by my helmet, worming its way down my leather jacket to cool my heated skin. I knew I had to hurry to get to the location—the last thing we needed was to have Audrey and her friend leaving and disappearing.

If it was one thing I learned from being a soldier in the CAF, was that we had to strike while the iron’s hot.

Instead of slowing down to enjoy the air, I glanced behind me, kicked the cycle into gear and swung from the lane I was in to get around a convertible.

I parked my cycle two spots from Wolf’s car then knocked on his window. His doors clicked and I eased into the passenger seat. He glanced at me, smiled and returned his attention to the building just across from us.

“See why I wanted you to wear something sexy?” Wolf asked. “You can’t walk into a place like that looking shabby. You’ll stand out.”

“A strip club?” I frowned. “Why would a woman like her make a man get her into a place like this? And it’s not even a fancy joint—”

I leaned forward.

“Is that one pregnant?” I asked.

Wolf shrugged. “Hey, we all need to work. Times are hard.”

I glanced at him to see he was serious. And while I agreed with him, a place like this isn’t a place for a pregnant woman. Anything could happen and hurt her and her baby—a fight breaking out, someone drunken idiot throwing something, a slip and fall.

“Maybe they have good health insurance.” I muttered.

Wolf spared me a glance.

Audrey wasn’t what I expected.

Though she’d been on my radar, I couldn’t believe a woman Carter would fall in love with could be capable of what was happening.
