“Carter isn’t—”

“He’s fighting it because he doesn’t know if you’ll accept him.”

“Speaking from experience, Wolf?”

“Yes.” He replied. “Very real, kinda recent experience.”

“I see.”

"Let me let you in on a little secret most men would prefer women don’t know.” Wolf offered me a soft smile. “We don’t take rejection well. He doesn’t know if you’ll claim him or let him claim you. I can see it in his eyes, every time he looks at you, he’s thinking it.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat.

“How do you know all this?”

“I was there.” He replied. “I was living in the wilderness when Myra fell into my lap. And the moment I saw her, I wanted her. As much as I claimed to have sworn off humanity, off women—there was something about her that got to me. I fell in love with that woman, kicking and screaming. But in the end—I wasn’t weak enough to resist.”

I smiled. “She’s a lucky woman, Andrei.”

“Oh, you’re so wrong.” His voice cracked. “I’m the lucky one. I tellSolnishkoevery day that I had to level up to be with her.”

I hoped one day a man would talk about me like Wolf talked about hisSolnishko.

Correction—I hoped one day Carter would talk about me the way Wolf spoke about his Solnishko.

“Don’t be too hard on him.” Wolf patted my shoulder. “No matter what he says right now or doesn’t say—he’s trying.”

I nodded.

“Now, let me escort you home.”

I side-eyed him.

“What?” He asked. “It’s the gentleman thing to do and I’m a gentleman.”

“Should I ask Myra to confirm this?”

Wolf smirked.

By the time I arrived, Dillon had finished his homework and was in the pool with Eli. I stopped long enough to wave at them then made my way with Wolf into the office to explain to Carter what was happening.

“Before Wasp arrived, I put a tag on her car.” Wolf explained. “It’s my last one, so Tex will have to send me more. Right now, he can see where she is—safer to tail her that way.”

“So, sheistrying to kill me.” Carter was crestfallen.

“Who’s trying to kill you?” Dillon asked from the door, wrapped in a towel.

My heart broke for Carter.

“Dillon, go get changed.” Carter told him. “When you’re done, come down here—we need to talk.”

“I do not envy you this conversation, brother.” Wolf stood. “If you need me, you know where I’ll be.”

When Carter nodded, Wolf winked at me and let himself out of the house.

Neither of us spoke until long after his engine died in the distance. Quickly, I hurried over to close the door, then sat across Carter’s lap and pulled him into my arms.

I wasn’t sure what else to do for him because this was never a situation I’d been in before. It was almost like the man I’d met before was slowly disappearing in front of my eyes and there was nothing I could do.
