“Is the reason you had Uncle Charlie bring Eli here because you think he’s in danger too?” Dillon asked.

“Yes.” I replied. “We overheard a conversation between your mother and one of the men she’s hired to—”

“I get it.”

Silence.

“I’m not worried about mom sending people after us.” Dillon said after an eternity.

“Really? These people are dangerous.”

“I know.” He rested his head on the sofa cushion, staring up at the ceiling. “What’s more bad-ass than a wasp?”

“You’re right.” I replied.

But as dangerous as Seema Lipson seemed to be, she wasn’t invincible and I worry about what Audrey would do if she ever found out that Seema and I—well, shit—what were we?”

“Dad?”

“Mm?”

“Would you still love me if I was different?” Dillon asked.

Blinking, I turned to look at him.

“I know you love me now.” Dillon continued before I could gather myself. “But what if I wasn’t who you think I am?”

I smiled.

“You’re my son, Dillon.” I told him, softly. “That is the most important thing.”

“But—”

“I will love you no matter what.” I interrupted him. “I mean, sometimes you drive me absolutely insane, and I don’t particularly like you in those moments. But the love I have for you is never-ending.”

I paused, measured my words then smiled.

“Even if you do more than like Eli.”

Dillon gasped.

“You knew!” He blinked.

“Of course, I knew.” I tossed a hand up. “It’s not as big a secret as you and Eli think it is. Have you told him?”

Dillon nodded.

“Did he reject you?”

Dillon shook his head.

“He’s just afraid of what you’d do to him if you found out.” Dillon admitted. “I mean, at least he said that much. So, there’s some hope.”

“Look, Dillon.” I shifted so I could face him. “As a father I should tell you to wait until you’re older. But the truth is, we live in a time where I have to teach you the rights and wrongs of a relationship and I think I’ve failed you at that. So now, you have to learn it differently than others.”

Dillon tilted his head.

“I want you to be careful.” I explained. “Intimacy is important but it’s not everything at this point in your relationship. Do not rush into anything—anything.”
