The squeal of tires filled the air, and I took a second to see it was Myra behind the wheel of Wolf’s vehicle and Carter was hording Audrey into the back seat.

Once they were gone, Wolf and I took down the other men, reported to Tex and began searching the faces.

Not one of them was Selvin.

“Tex, we lost Selvin.” I reported.

“We’ll get him.” Tex assured me. “Get out of there. 5-0 incoming.”

CARTER

I paced one way, then the next.

Myra had taken us back to one of Wolf’s properties in the city and I was out of range of the earpiece I’d been using to keep in touch with everyone.

“How are you not worried?” I asked her.

“I’m the wife of a very loyal, ex-military man.” Myra explained. “They call and he gets up and go. I have to trust his people to have his back.”

I nodded.

“Don’t worry—she’s okay.”

Myra rubbed my back and handed me a warm mug.

After she left to figure out food, Audrey walked up to stand beside me at the window.

My skin crawled.

A bad taste rose in the back of my throat then radiated outward to my tongue. No matter how many sips of coffee I allowed myself, the taste was still there.

“She?” Audrey asked.

“I’m not in the mood for your cloaked questions right now, Audrey.” I told her. “And back up. You’re too close.”

She stepped back and I faced her.

“You came to save me.” Audrey pointed out. “That has to mean something.”

“Just what precisely do you think it’s supposed to mean?”

“That you forgive me.” She replied. “That you want me back.”

I scoffed.

“You really are a sociopath.” I cleared my throat. “You said all that with a straight face.”

“Carter, don’t—”

“Don’t?” I demanded. “Don’t what? You really do see me as a fool—a man without a spine. You really find that kind of man sexy?”

She hung her head.

“You cheated on me—” I pushed. “Brought this man home to our bed at a time when you knew our son would be coming home. Then you let him walk in on you with someone else. Hurting me is one thing, but when you got Dillon involved—you’re lucky I didn’t kill you.”

“But you came for me!” She screeched. “You came when I was in danger. That means you still love me!”
