“You’ve turned my son against me.” Audrey glared at me. “You and that bitch, just walked right in and stole my child.”

“I’m not going to argue with you, Audrey.” I was out of fight. “I’ve taught my son that when someone tells him who they are, he’s to believe them. You’ve told him repeatedly who you are and he’s finally believing you. You will never get the chance to hurt him again. Right now, you’re going to prison. But if you get out—and come for me or my kid again, I’ll put you in a place not even the bird can shit on you.”

I pulled out my cell.

“Tex?”

“At your service, brother.” The Texan replied.

“We’re ready.” I told him.

“Five minutes.” Tex replied and was gone.

Right on time, a woman entered the space. She was dressed in a body fitting jeans, a light coat that when she eased the side away, the badge and gun stood out prominently.

“I’m detective Alison Rainey.” She introduced herself. “Tex sent me all the information on what’s happening right now—I’m assuming this is the infamous Audrey Finch?”

“Yes.” I nodded.

“You’re really sending me away?” Audrey was incredulous. “We were married! That should mean something to you!”

“Why?” I asked, emotionlessly. “It meant nothing to you.”

Detective Rainey pulled Audrey from her chair, turned her around and began reading her rights while putting her in cuffs.

“And another thing.” I called as Detective Rainey began leading her out the door.

They paused.

“I’m going to need you to stop using my name.” I pointed out. “We’re divorced. We’vebeendivorced..”

“Why? So you can give it to her?”

“I’m going to give it to her whether or not you like it—whether or not you still use it because she’d be a better person to carry my name.” I told her, proudly. “But youwillchange your name.”

Audrey started sobbing as the detective led her out.

I closed my eyes, wishing I felt some kind of emotion about her crying. I wish I felt some sadness for her being arrested or the prospect of her facing some jail time.

If it was only to honour the fact we’d been married and had a child together, I wanted to feel something.

But all I felt was cold and numb.

“I’ve been curious.” I peeled a tangerine from Levi’s fruit basket. “How did it go with you and Mr. Price?”

Levi laughed.

“It went okay.” He replied, using a tube of something to draw lines on either side of his nose. “He’s very sweet and so sexy. But—”

“But?”

“I just came out of a relationship, and I feel kind of bruised.”

“That’s to be expected.” I replied. “Look, maybe I’m not the best person to be speaking to about relationships. I was such a shit girlfriend, my ex left me for his ex-wife.”
